Gustave Caillebotte - Young Man at His Window (1876) There's a quality in his technique, sometimes that reminds me of Magritte, oddly enough. #PAINTING #ART #IMPRESSIONISTS

The late 1870s to the 1880s were a major turning point in the career of Camille Pissarro and the other Impressionists. Here we can see his tendency toward pointillist techniques which would be further developed in the later 1880s under Seurat's influence.

Inspired by the French impressionists and post-impressionists, I followed in their footsteps and explored the landscapes they painted in the French countryside.

Usually what you get is something like: the Impressionists had an intuitive understanding of visual perception, and now we can explain rigorously what they understood intuitively. So basically the Impressionists are reduced to amateur neuroscientists. This totally misses the point.

"I find the Impressionists as a whole rather a bore" is a thing I just read.

Painted in 1892, this work exemplifies Gustave Caillebotte’s love of sailing.  The scene is that of the Seine alongside Ile Marande, just across the river from Argenteuil; a favourite spot amongst the Impressionists including Manet, Renoir and Monet.

Pastel is pigment in a stick—fragile, luminous, impossible to erase.
For the Impressionists, it was perfect for capturing fleeting sensations.
Monet used it to test perceptions too quick for oil.

'La Varenne, banks of the Marne, fishermen in boats.' (1913) Albert Marquet's serial exploration of views (he painted the Marne numerous times) echoed the Impressionists' interest in capturing the river under a variety of conditions.
