For those going home to visit family this weekend:

• Samsung calls it the Rite of the Knife
• LG calls it Lacrimation
• Sony calls it Infloresence of the Soul
• Roku calls it Abstract Chiaroscuro
• Google TV calls it Ego Concretion
• Vizio calls it 'smoothing'

Look at that! 🤩 It reminds me of Lantana camara, one of many plants that change color upon pollination: bc it’s easier for bees to see yellows than reds, yellow are young unpollinated flowers, red ones are older and pollination triggered production of more anthocyanin. #plantjoy #iamabotanist 🧪🌿🌸

This is a male papaya tree.
We're keeping it for its good looks.

Plants from friends are the best plants! This was one of my first heliamphora and it's one of the most unique. It's black stalk (infloresence) is the darkest in my collection and it's hairs are THICK. Heliamphora pulchella Akopan 🌱🥰🧡

Basal rosettes! New in Spring or overwintering leaves, they're everywhere... but can you identify them?!

Test yourself on these six beauties, spotted in the last week 😍

Day 18: Rhododendron calendulaceum aka flame azalea

I love it because it's fun/brightly colored and it can be a giant shrub.

DANGER.
A conceptensor nexus of
a higher order gestalt has
bound itself to this region

...I recognize the

It is:

Day 15 of my botanical #adventcalendar - time for Black Alpine-sedge! If I could I'd fill the calendar with sedges, but my shaky phone-pics aren't good enough 😂

This was a newly discovered population in the Grey Corries - always an exciting plant to find, and very distinctive #wildflowerhour

Toxicoscordion venenosum, the death-camas... [spooky voice] a flower so toxic that even its pollen can kill...

[sprightly voice] which is why this flower has its own special pollinator, Adrena astragali, the death-camas miner bee!

Milkweed beetle on common milkweed, which they rely on. No need to remove one if you find it on your milkweed. That’s why you planted milkweed, to attract and feed wildlife! Go get your camera! Summon the neighbors and point, jump up and down with joy! Or just enjoy it, maybe that’s more reasonable

Any entomologists or bug lovers who can tell me what insect is sitting in a carrot infloresence in my garden? It's appr. 10 mm from head to tail, and it seems pretty infatuated with the inflorescence.

The Mediterranean spurges are in flower at the moment in the gardens of Christchurch, New Zealand.

To me the comical faces on their flowers look more like creatures from the Jim Henson workshop.

(These are both planted and spreading wild, and each October I map […]

Let me know which one you have! If in flower, if you squish and roll the infloresence between your fingers you can often find immature fruits - and for V. carinata the keeled shape is distinctive even before it is ripe.
In my bit of Scotland, carinata has appeared recently but can form big colonies

The flowerspike is the largest unbranched infloresence of any plant, up to 3m tall, covered with thousands of tiny male flowers on the upper part, and female flowers around the base.

Not sure what species might be in Sweden, Debby, but I wouldn't be so quick to call them Early Purple - the infloresence seems quite dense for that.
