A blast from the past for any of the science fiction readers who may be here.

A scenario much like this was laid out in a book from 1983. Beings that existed solely in infospace causing trouble upon encountering human civilization.

It was part of "Code of the Lifemaker" by James P Hogan.

This is, of course, entirely impressionistic and may be attributable to other causes. I'm also seeing a drop in Russian mil-blogging reports passed along by both sides. On B'sky at least, the Ukraine war infospace seems to have changed.

Worse than harmful. AI’s should not be permitted to impersonate ANY human being.

AI-generated news in particular should be banned in Canada, and sites guilty of hosting such content should be blocked at the federal level.

It’s time we defend our infospace the way we defend our airspace.
“Someone who is Indigenous is going to carry those values and beliefs that they were raised with.. Their storytelling is going to be anchored around that." - Tamara Voudrach

"[An AI entity] that passes itself off as Indigenous is just another form of colonialism and erasure,” she said.

In a lot of cases the extreme end of that infospace (think Redfish, etc) were literally Russian influence ops bankrolled by that state, which then filtered out to a lot of more well-meaning GWOT-skeptical leftists and etc

You have to consider the infospace in market terms as well. Participating is better than not participating but not long after you start participating you'll find you hit equilibrium unless you've found the mystery low-hanging-fruit issue where raising salience from zero gets it instantly solved.

Yea, there's a whole infospace filled with men who treat any rape allegation with suspicion

I think there’s a primal fear that at any moment an angry crazy ex is going to the police to ruin your life, and the infospace amplifies that times a billion

I legit was not aware of this. Even if I’m way far from the demographic, I feel like it should have bubbled up in my infospace at some point.
The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward.

You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

This Dead Internet, degredation of the infospace stuff remains the real reason why we should be 'freaking out'

when i was a kid in eastern europe, stalker was a big deal. it was a cross-country phenomenon that permeated the entire post-soviet infospace, everyone fucking played it. i didn't but i decided to give some of the books a go and hoo boy. one of them was about a guy who's the best stalker ever

It isn’t simply the right, it’s the ownership class entire. We saw in real time as the Information Age c. 1991-2000(?) became the Disinfo Era. Oligarch-owned media permanently disfigured infospace.

Form community networks, make non-corporate connections. The future is samizdat & who you trust.

a Linke Berlin mayor will mean even more pro-Kremlin #drushba talking points will flood the German infospace😵‍💫

Is this in part because the White House been deliberately degrading the infospace? Lower trust in information can be paralysing, helping those with power retain it and making it harder to hold them accountable to objective truths. Straight from the Surkov playbook.
As midterms approach, new poll finds that few Americans trust campaigns or Trump
A new AP-NORC/USA Facts poll finds that Americans are more skeptical of government information than they were a few years ago, with majorities now saying they have little or no trust in federal government information about elections, foreign affairs or the environment.

I'll keep repeating this. We cannot leave the infospace an uncontested battleground. Monitoring is not enough. Regulators issuing warnings to platforms is not enough. The battle must be joined - legally, following democratic principles - with both counter narratives, and disruption. This neat deck…

I welcome any effort to pull back from the high volume all the time infospace around TTRPG crowdfunds. This echoes some of the reasons why I avoid having Evil Hat participate in themed months and whatnot. That’s great for the vendors, not so great for the publishers.
Finally, a healthy relationship to crowdfunding
Mothership maker Tuesday Knight Games says the team is “exhausted” by crowdfunding initiatives meant to help small publishers.
