In northern Botswana, elephants repeatedly break through a 240-kilometre wildlife fence. The authors interpret these breaks as “counter-infrastructuring”: elephants reshape the landscape and challenge human efforts to order it.

Useful leftist manifesto against AI. As corporate AI rapidly takes over our workplaces, if not the real world, it's worthwhile learning from analyses of the broader political economy.

Dan McQuillan's latest on decomputing "beyond AI". This paper proposes decomputing as a degrowth framework to reclaim agency and develop convivial alternatives that centre an ethics of care.

By proposing to view the interactions between elephants and fence designers as 'more-than-human counter-infrastructuring', and by revealing the ambivalence of local stakeholders towards the fence, we argue that a porous fence is not failing but is actually a good compromise

Attempts to govern AI fail because it's diagnostic of deeper changes in the order of things zenodo.org/records/1945.... Decomputing aims instead to decouple critical services from technocratic collapse. Next week I'll post the preprint 'Beyond AI: Infrastructuring the Common Good'.

Infra·structuring

Infra·structuring brings together practices of holding space, stretching time, and netting relations - longstanding, non-corporate ways of building shared worlds that outlive standardisation and universality.

A lot of what is going under the radar of many is "the right" infrastructuring their approach(es) towards fascism. Figureheads, platforms, status, and 'prestige' are but some of the techinques. It is glaringly obvious, and yet.
