My main lesson from all this: follow your nose! This all started as a fun side project to figure out if we could map a new mutation in an insectary stock, and ended here!

We do transport them like this, for sure! In the insectary, we tend to make fake flowers from chopped up drinking straws that we fill with sugar water or gatorade, though ideally they need a pollen source too.

I should add, it got the name 'ivory' because the insectary stock had an aberrant pattern known as Piano Keys, which at some point started throwing out the occasional fully white butterfly. I couldn't help to run with the pun.

Back in 2018, @wtf-r-species.bsky.social tweeted a picture of an ebay specimen that caught my eye. Through a long and elaborate process we ended up figuring out that there was an insectary mutant stock carrying a large deletion that caused this phenotype. academic.oup.com/g3journal/ar... 3/

Freshman year college, first semester, got a job at an insectary greenhouse raisin' BUGS. I hadn't even made it to day 1 when my mom forced me to quit because I was in school to study, not work. I was not deterred, so the next year I got a job at the vertebrate museum sortin' ALL MANNER OF FROGS.
In honor of the fired lady tell me about your shortest job tenure. I worked at a candy store for less than 2 weeks when I was like 16

If I get a permanent job doing this and have my own lab, I'm going to invest in a drill press, so my students don't have to do it. That and rotate who has to power wash the insectary

Insectary for control of musk thistle, the Musk Thistle Rosette Weevil or Crown Weevil, Trichosirocalus horridus. This weevil develops in the crown of the musk thistle rosette. Damage by the weevil happens in the developing tissue of the plant. The damage stunts its growth….

At the moment 9 (or 10 counting myself) - 4 postdocs, 4 PhD students, and a lab manager

We've been an large as 30 before, with 10 postdocs, 6 or 7 grad students, multiple admin and insectary staff, and undergrads.

It all depends on current funding
To my fellow researchers in life science around the 🌎. I have a question: How many professionals (researchers, associate, assistant, tech, engineers...) vs students/postdoc/in your group (if part of big units with multiple groups, consider the unit). Pls indicate your country.

In her 1931 study of the life history of Calliphora ochracea (pictured above) she wrote that each day she would release the captive fly she was studying so it could "fly around the insectary in the sunlight for a period of time". I think this is so sweet!

Dude, this is too cute! Thank you, and if you haven’t already make sure to follow Insectary for their comic skull queen too!
Finally got time to draw this pretty primate and baaaah-d bitch

Man recruiters really throw spaghetti against the wall. Just got an offer for “insectary technician” at google. Apparently they set up product testing on mosquitos.
I’m guessing I was pinged for the R/python and data collection skills but I have 0 familiarity with molecular biology lol.

Wondering how to use your @derbyuni.bsky.social Biology/Zoology Field Card given to you in induction week? Here I am using it in the department insectary to remind myself of insect morphology. 🧪🦗

This also applies to other insect models! We have insectary facilities and I'd at least be happy to knock on doors and see if we can't sort something this week.

Across Penryn+Streatham UoExeter has many insect system facilities and models in use. Have ideas on aphid immunity if curious to collab.
If you wanna slap something together #Drosophila folks I am happy to support Newton Postdoc fellows if I'm appropriate (either as host or ref).

Can chat quickly to sort a mad dash if interested. Can't promise as need to liaise w/ dept but if quick can try.
