Isn't this an argument that the files *should* have been released? The institutional failure to investigate and prosecute Epstein shouldn't mean his crimes remain secret.

yes, and then some! a priest is dependent on the diocese for not just his paycheck, benefits and insurance etc but also his housing, his green card or immigration sponsorship, even his car sometimes, not to mention any access to institutional resources (real estate etc). they have a lot to lose here

If transition is 'assimilationist', why do we have to work so hard to access it? If it's treating trans subjects as a "niche for-profit market" why do we need to secure our own supply lines, community resources, or fucking make the stuff ourselves? In defiance of all institutional gatekeeping?

As a non-traditional researcher without institutional access I can tell you: publishers have made it increasingly impossible to access scientific research. You aren’t even at the stage of competing against algorithmic systems because every paper is behind a $100+ fee to even read

As a non-traditional researcher without institutional access I can tell you: publishers have made it increasingly impossible to access scientific research. You aren’t even at the stage of competing against algorithmic systems because every paper is behind a $100+ fee to even read

There's a real issue of class when it comes to how we talk about literary preservation.
The microlibrary idea matters because it fundamentally posits that access to literature should be NON-INSTITUTIONAL and that anyone can make it for themselves.
It's about ownership and direct access to info.

So I guess the only way to avoid (potentially inaccurate) AI summaries is to not pay for the premium version of the ACM Digital Library. Or for those of us who have institutional access, to log out of our accounts.

You can scream yourself hoarse until the end of days about how transition is a dangerous and deadly fad but that won't change that trans people exist, have always existed, and will help each other access the means to transition in the absence of institutional support.
