The UFW wishes our Jewish friends a sweet #RoshHashanah. The first institutional religious support for grape strikers came when boards of rabbis in big Eastern cities declared boycotted products non-Kosher. 2/

Wow I just looked up the price of adobe products if you’re like a normal person without any kind of institutional license. People pay this, every year, huh.

The answer to cognitive overload is not more technology!!

The answer is a functional society. And that begins with reforming our incredibly dysfunctional institutional structure that allows predatory technology to be installed in classrooms and sold as consumer products.
Bracketing for a moment whether it *works* or whether Meta can be trusted, this does strike as obviously the most appealing and genuinely useful application of the technology for people in their actual lives.
'you're cognitively offloading'. yes. correct. that is what i wish to do. i do not wish to expend cognition figuring out which pharmacist takes my insurance and is closest. i want to offload it & be told who that is. you are free to continue manually doing this task you evidently find so meaningful

„The irony couldn’t be starker: the very programs best equipped to study the social and ethical implications of AI were being defunded, even as the university promoted the use of OpenAI’s products across campus. This isn’t innovation—it’s institutional auto-cannibalism.“

I would also say this is true of things like adobe based products or their alternatives, basically any art and productivity software, institutional alternatives have to be offered and these tiny use cases have to be dismantled.

The USAID Development Experience Clearinghouse is sometimes a pain to use, but it is the Agency’s institutional memory of project reports, evaluations and products. Its server can’t be found right now.
NEW: USAID source says staff are scrambling to save archived copies of US regulations before they're gone & are being actively locked out of systems, including a publicly available database of USAID documents.

WIRED has built software to systematically check the status of 1,374 government domains.
US Government Websites Are Disappearing in Real Time
A growing number of US government websites have gone offline as of Saturday, including several related to USAID and others focused on youth programs, Africa, and more.

Institutional investors should have dumped Tesla years ago, once it became clear that Musk is a compulsive liar who constantly completely fabricates claims about Tesla’s soon to be released products and tech.

The multi decade project schedules are not immutable, but products of institutional design to fragment decision making and funding.

They are political choices. We are capable of rapidly advancing projects when there is political will.

Ai is a rot at the center of higher education, and it requires a coherent institutional response to address. But universities are too busy investing in exciting new AI products to stop and think about the impact they're having.

Also, Dr. Marks was head of CBER, the part of FDA that regulates all biologic products, so not just vaccines. Many cancer drugs too. this is a huge loss of institutional knowledge.

"Gay Inc" was coined by trans academic/activist Myrl Beam, who wrote the book on the type of institutional org and "conservative turn in queer movement politics" it embodies: firestorm.coop/products/204...

It's been used, especially among plenty of trans folks in the trenches, for most of a decade.
So, there is a narrative shaping up that the trans medicaid ban was stopped just by lobbying from Gay Inc orgs and behind the scenes pressure from Dem pols (particularly Baldwin and McBride)

This isn't just wrong, it's dangerously so. It covers up the actual tactics used in a damaging way. 🧵

Why the hell are they pleading this as TI/Abuse of process?

(Answer is likely: Nippon uses Sidley Austin, and Sidley does not do plaintiff's-side products liability work, and therefore simply never even thought about it as a cause of action due to their institutional context)

Genuine question: is our reliance on these corporations - our institutional reliance in particular - really necessary? Why do I have to use Microsoft products (Outlook, Office)? Are there really no options for providing these basic services? The way we are dependent on these companies is disturbing.

That’s actually something we’re going to discuss! These products are ubiquitous so we’re going to strategize how to work around them an institutional level

Sure there's institutional knowledge being lost but also (as the article even explains) we do not make 1980's products with 1980's components anymore so you'd basically have to R&D everything over again *anyway*

Build social pressure, then political pressure and grassroots organization at institutional investment funds and mass buyers of the products you hope to target.

Even when it does not work immediately, it adds an undeniably cost to the future decisions of capital decision-makers.
Did you know that the California teachers and employee pension funds collectively own a $40M stake in the NYT worth around 0.3% of the company?

Did you know the New York teachers pension fund owns another 0.1%?

Did you know NYT leadership is paid based on the market value of shares?

we took every single one of the cultural and institutional biases embedded in our language and then baked them into the foundation of future tech products

there’s no road where that doesn’t end badly
June 14, 2024 at 9:15 PM
nobody did this maliciously but this is basically what happened to 343 Studios and why they no longer exist and Activision is making Halo now. institutional knowledge didn't exist over there so they fucked over their own products
I'm telling you guys, you gotta put killcodes in the games you make now and hold them hostage. Day 0 patch set to automatically apply and delete everything if you aren't there to manually pause it. Go full Pandora Tomorrow. Your bosses don't know anything about coding, they can't fix it!

It's known marketing strategy, to get your products into higher ed (Apple computers, LexisNexis, come to mind). Corp and institutional use, getting gov to subsidize them is only way to get even close to what's needed to survive. It doesn't take long. Work stops at many places if GPT is down already

Personally I think failing to keep your current products overtly current while spending all your institutional attention on risky new product releases is a great way to get your lunch eaten by motivated rivals in a hellaciously competitive industry, but I'm just a silly poster
