I need a more elegant phrase than "engage with". Like, technically you can use read for things beyond print media but that's kinda clumsy as well

legit, this is one of my absolute favorite books i've read on game design. i especially love Derek getting into the philosophy behind difficulty, friction, and intentionality and why it matters to a game experience. can't recommend this book enough

I think "bullshit machine" is a better way to refer to it. It doesn't possess the intentionality necessary to make something up. It doesn't—and CAN'T—know or care what truth is. It's a set of instructions producing output, and whether that output is true or false largely comes down to luck.

You can ask whether the natural process that results in cloud formations interpretible by us as images of things must therefore be viewed as having conscious awareness or intentionality. An algorithm that arranges material signifiers still relies on us to interpret them as meaningful symbols.

Growing up in a household steeped in global storytelling, anti colonial politics and deep cultural heritage that intentionality shows in everything - down to the upcycled chindi jacket. As a fellow Indian American, I couldn’t be prouder to see this kind of representation.💙

You're using software to do something. But this does not answer whether the software uses semantics, has intentionality, if any statements this software produces can be called truth-apt, etc.

People really need to get over fixating on little details to “catch” AI art. The only consistent, real “tell” for genAI anything is always going to be the lack of intentionality or thought in the piece. And even that is not enough to distinguish it reliably from human-made slop.
