#intercropped
This big beautiful non-native bug is a growing pest for Northeast U.S. gardeners & esp wineries

But a new study reveals an #agroecology answer: milkweed

This monarch butterfly fave intercropped w/ grapes kills 60-80% in 24 hrs: projects.sare.org/sare_project...

Might boost monarch numbers too?

I've found herbs never go amiss. Overpriced at most stores, grow pretty easily and in significant quantities and can often be intercropped with other stuff.

China is a leader in conserving agricultural heritage systems. My visit with T. Guo led us to tea gardens in Yunnan province. What looks like an untended plantation is actually a smallholder-managed & incredibly diverse agroecosystem of tea intercropped with buckwheat, flax, maize, sweet potato etc.

When it rains, the greenhouse film acts like a huge condenser plate, so it just rains slower in the high tunnel.

I had intercropped my fall plants - collards, kale and spinach, and they'd all started to come up nicely before I left for my shows

They left the collards, at least, but only three plants out of my nine

🌳 The #EARTHONE Pilot 3 in Italy explores how agroforestry enhances soil health, boosts carbon storage, and supports climate resilience. Poplar trees are intercropped with cereals, soybeans and maize to study soil quality, microbial activity, and emission reduction.

Recently I visited the Machakos area of Kenya and saw steep terraced hillsides, with the terraces protected by grasses and trees; maize being intercropped with leguminous perennials, residues being returned to the soil surface. And all this happening at scale, just so impressive!

I know the brown mustard we use at veg farm is allelopathic, which makes for a great cover crop but have never intercropped with it…usually allelopathy more so affects germination and seedlings but maybe taters can suffer as well, like other nightshades are very susceptible to black walnut juglone
