Im experiencing a sort of interdisciplinary themed psychosis

such a lovely interdisciplinary community at umass amherst!
I’m a big fan of the Big Debates™️ so am predisposed to not want to see them dissolved, but @quiltydunn.bsky.social made a great case at UMass today that that’s exactly what we should do with the nativist/empiricist debate

What dept is an interdisciplinary field like this typically housed under?

I’ve written a bunch on the systemic and material issues with universities administrators prizing interdisciplinary collaboration, esp between the sciences and the humanities. Interdisciplinary is not an unqualified good. www.artnews.com/art-in-ameri...

“Science should become better at evaluating researchers according to the problems they can solve, the perspectives they can connect, and the value they contribute to collaborative work—not simply how continuously they have published within one narrowly defined field.'
How Can Science Better Support Interdisciplinary Researchers?
Academics and industry experts discuss how science can better support interdisciplinary researchers through reforming funding applications, collaboration, and traditional career advancement.

None of you know my friend john but please congratulate my friend john through the ether for passing their quals and advancing to PhD candidacy in their super cool interdisciplinary program on labor, art, and community. 🎉

We're hiring a research engineer to work with myself, @inkandswitch.com, and an amazing interdisciplinary team on using cryptographic proofs and AI to verify physical-world (e.g. manufacturing) processes: www.inkandswitch.com/jobs/ccti-re...

For me being interdisciplinary means looking at two academics from different fields having an argument on my timeline and thinking to myself "they will never agree because they have made mutually exclusive assumptions about ontology that this conversation does not surface"

This happens over and over again (bsky.app/profile/mcop...). Rudimentary citing of political science literature, with most of the cites from things over 20 years old. If we tried this in reverse, economists wouldn't tolerate it. It's impossible to have productive interdisciplinary dialogue this way.

i've often felt like "interdisciplinary initiatives" are sort of like Abundance agendas at universities, insofar as they are about "breaking down disciplinary divides" in the most vacuous anti-political ways possible

Lovely article on the interdisciplinary research that different scholars and I have been doing to uncover how animals experience death
Do Animals Grieve? (Gift Article)
The feeling of existential loss was long thought to be uniquely human. But studies of coyotes, cockatoos and other creatures are prompting some scientists to reconsider.

Leant my brain even more than my pen in terms of work on this update… It was my first time being able to share my interdisciplinary craft outside of my own work, and seriously such an honor. Thank you, Pendog!!!

Cannot overstate how great the community is here (and how much Najoung is responsible for making it happen). BU has made a big bet on interdisciplinary work in machine cognition.

The job posts in the thread are for:
- Human-centered AI (CDS)
- AI for science (CDS)
- AI broadly (CS)
Come be my colleague at BU CS & CDS! I've personally invested a lot of my time here at BU towards building a community for language & computation, and I think it's been working out pretty well so far with a lot of interesting people in this area :) Actual job ads below 👇

I wasn't sure to mention this, but I'm actually considering writing an interdisciplinary book length lyric essay on Irena Dubrovna.

Institutions deceive. Here is a call for adventure:

"The first molecular biologists were a motley crew of misfits and revolutionaries with no particularly relevant training, many of them ex-physicists. […] They burned their bridges."

Important lesson for interdisciplinary endeavors: If you’re doing work that goes into the domain of another discipline, you’d best check with members of that field to be sure that you aren’t full of bs.

"Students in this new interdisciplinary program will apply cutting-edge techniques, (e.g., AI, computer vision, and numerical modeling) to tackle fundamental problems in the geosciences"

One of these things is not like the others.

The decline of interdisciplinary publications that allow writers to stretch their wings is a real shame.

It was a joy to read (and write about) this new book by @tanialombrozo.bsky.social, whose work I have followed since I was an undergraduate! Tania is a role model to so many of us with interdisciplinary interests across philosophy and psychology, and this book illustrates why 👇
Review of WHY WE ASK WHY in Science, written by @chazfirestone.bsky.social, who does an amazing job extracting and clearly explaining several core ideas from the book in a single, beautifully written page
