👻 Forget ghosts & goblins! 🎃 #Cheatgrass is a real nightmare! 🌾 This invasive grass outcompetes native plants and fuels #wildfires. 🔥 Even scarier? Those fires create conditions for MORE cheatgrass! A frightening feedback loop!

European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica in Rhamnaceae family), the bane of Minnesota forests. This invasive jerk invades woods & farmlands, & is hard to eradicate. Small ones pull up easily. I put them to dry & die on what I call "the pile of sorrows & regrets." #invasiveplants #minnesota #foraging

Managing invasive plants, like this Japanese stiltgrass, feels like a never-ending chore. Necessary, though. This area is great habitat for the existing jewelweed population to expand—once this shit has been removed. #NativePlants #InvasivePlants

Went and visited an interesting garden center in Saint-Eustache, Quebec today. An amazing contrast between super rare and cool #NativePlants and incredibly #InvasivePlants. Weird.

And for #invasiveplants that reproduce through fragmentation, digging and pulling can create THOUSANDS of plant fragments...each potentially capable of establishing somewhere new.

#Aquaticplantmanagement isn’t simply about removing what we can see.

Canadian Cities Push for Federal Regulation to Combat Invasive Plants
Canadian cities are increasingly implementing bylaws to restrict the sale of invasive plants by garden centres and nurseries, as advocates push for federal regulation to address a growing biodiversity crisis. The Canadian Coalition for Invasive Plant Regulation (CCIPR) argues that a national regulatory body and database would help mitigate the spread of invasive species, which threaten ecosystems and biodiversity. Municipal bylaws are described as 'patchwork solutions' that waste resources, with advocates emphasizing the need for a coordinated federal approach. The federal government aims to reduce invasive species introductions by 50% by 2030, but current regulations vary by jurisdiction. Cities like Nanaimo and Surrey have passed measures to ban or restrict invasive plant sales, while others, like London, Ontario, require retailers to provide risk information. Experts warn that the horticultural trade is a primary pathway for invasive species, and stronger regulation, public education, and shared databases are essential to protect ecosystems. Garden centres and nurseries are urged to adopt proactive measures, as consumer awareness and industry responsibility are critical to curbing the spread of invasive plants.
