One of the nice things about IRC is that both clients and the servers (ircd) can run on a potato (like a C64 or VIC), which any protocol/ircd extension should provide support for, IMO.

had a thought about just firing up some flavor of ircd and finding me there, but on second thought: you won't find me. i will be under a rock in a sea of rocks. if i need to communicate i will leave cryptic notes scribbled on bits of paper in your coat pockets when you're not looking

The domain transfer completed and I'm working my way through configuring all the things.
After a decade or two out of the game though I'm having to give myself crash refresher courses in Linux, network, web, DNS, sendmail, and IRCd administration...
So progress is a bit slow.

There's such a breadth of old "you got owned" zines showcasing private messages between users on irc servers via logging either through direct IRCd configuration or through the introduction of modules or even malicious scripts.

I'm pretty sure you can! I don't know about compiling an IRCD for ARM devices, but it's possible.

You can protect your users by enabling email confirmation (or code confirmation on 2.1) in services. If your IRCd supports it you can also limit the LIST command to registered users.

My current web host doesn't give me terminal access to install an IRCD, and searching for hosting providers online just gives me dozens of articles written by AI recommending lists of providers that all have AI art and AI customer service representatives I JUST WANT A DUMB TERMINAL

Thinking about IRC extensions, and the issue appears to be not so much with supporting more advanced formatting than (BG/FG) colouring, but rather with supporting things other than text.
While supporting images with local storage on the ircd is akin to a forum, documents & video gets rough.
