At the risk of being overly deterministic, I think what gets overlooked here is that some form of cultural manifestation of nihilistic Last Man style thinking is directly downstream of a cultural milieu, specifically the end of the Cold War and growing irreligion

rRUmp & GOP have turned done more for EVs & irreligion than anyone in modern history. Personally not a huge fan of EVs, but my next car will be electric, if for no other reason than a big 🖕to the US & Middle East.

Yet it only held together with ignorance and equally naive belief in some kind of dogmatic, enlightened ‘secularism’. Which those r/atheists took forward as rationalism or irreligion or disbelief or whatever - in practice, a lot of debatelording that platformed the worst people (of both ‘sides’)

Illiberal perversion of 'secularism' (i.e., not secularism but merely forced irreligion viciously attacking minorities). And cowardly federal politicians won't even speak out against it.
today in Stop Romanticizing Canada:

Quebec’s Bill 9 has just taken effect, barring women in veils from receiving public services. Public employees include university faculty, so professors have been instructed to require veiled women to uncover their faces or be removed from the classroom.

It's not secularism, but rather forced irreligion; an illiberal perversion of secularism.

I have to agree with professor Emmett Macfarlane here. Quebec is peddling irreligion and selling it as secularism. thelinknewspaper.ca/article/queb...

irreligion is also not the same as atheism lol

Tbh, I sorta feel like what we really need is a way to talk to people about mortality in a developed world where irreligion is increasingly the norm

Because in the absence of that, certain groups of people are just replacing the old stories with different varieties of mysticism

I think the amount of violence and death committed in the name of controlling "the Holy Land" for the past almost 2 millennia have proven a level of derangement and irresponsibility that warrants taking it away from everybody involved until they can learn to share it (so probably indefinitely).

And Quebec media fed one of their own a diet of hate. They are not promoting secularism, but irreligion, and a real contempt for one religion: Islam.

Crown Prince #Reza_Pahlavi, like his illustrious grandfather and father, is committed to true #Islam.

Immorality, irreligion, and atheism have no place in this family. Their Islam is a compassionate, #people-centered_Islam— not state-imposed Islam [forced religion used as an extremist ideology].

It's clear that there's a difference between irreligion (i.e. not practicing a form of religion on some level) and outright atheism (which is an explicit declaration of belief, or lack thereof). The West generally trends toward the former without necessarily heading towards the latter.

Yes but it's been suppressed by the right gaining with certain "working class" (euphemism for unintelligent) populations. Just look at polls on gay marriage and irreligion rates.

Watching the new Knowing Better video and learning the Hawaiians collectively abolished their old religion independent of any Christian missionaries just for Christian missionaries to show up a year later and convince everyone their irreligion was an act of divine providence

Because they fail to understand democracy and secularism (which they misinterpret as irreligion).

Because they attempt to forcibly take possession of people's minds and hearts.

Because they obstruct progress and development.
