IUCN and Sweden launch major new partnership to advance Nature-based Solutions for biodiversity and resilient communities
The three-year programme, supported by Sweden with a budget of SEK 30 million (approximately EUR 2.7 million), will help restore ecosystems, strengthen biodiversity, and enhance the resilience and well-being of rural communities across Armenia through the implementation of Nature-based Solutions. The initiative represents a strategic partnership between the Government of Armenia, the Government of Sweden and IUCN to advance the implementation of Nature-based Solutions across Armenia. The programme will support the restoration of river corridors and degraded agricultural landscapes in rural areas, promote climate-resilient land management practices, and strengthen the capacity of local stakeholders to design and implement Nature-based Solutions that benefit both people and nature. These efforts will enhance biodiversity and increase the resilience of local communities, while contributing to Armenia's commitments under the three Rio Conventions and the EU Green Agenda. Implemented by IUCN in close partnership with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia and a consortium of partners - the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC), Charitable Public Organisation “Shen” (Shen NGO), the American University of Armenia (AUA) and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) - the project will combine on-the-ground ecosystem restoration with policy support, capacity development, knowledge generation, and resource...

IUCN Director General delivers statement at 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP17)
The challenge before us is no longer one of ambition. It is one of delivery. The first global review sends a clear message. Progress is real, but slow. The world is not on track to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. The question now is not “can we deliver?” It is “do we choose to?” and how quickly. On behalf of IUCN, I bring five calls to action that our Union stands ready to support. First: Make biodiversity everyone’s business. The GBF touches our food systems, health, infrastructure, trade and fiscal policies. We must show every sector that nature is at the heart of what they want to achieve. Protecting nature and prosperity are not competing goals. They are the same goal. Second: Use the tools we already have. We should not wait for new guidance or processes. The necessary knowledge, standards and responsible technologies exist today. We need to scale them. Third: Strengthen the means of implementation. Conservation remains underfunded, while harmful incentives continue to drive biodiversity loss. We must mobilise more resources from all sources, redirect harmful subsidies, and align financial flows with nature. Fourth: All hands on deck. Indigenous Peoples and local communities, women, youth, businesses...

IUCN calls for nature and people to guide implementation of the EU Arctic Strategy
The Strategy provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation in a region undergoing profound environmental and geopolitical change. Its ambitions for security, climate resilience, sustainable prosperity and opportunities for Arctic communities are closely connected. Protecting and restoring nature is essential to achieving each of them. “The Arctic’s ecosystems sustain livelihoods, cultures and communities, and help regulate the global climate. Putting nature and people at the centre of Arctic cooperation is an investment in lasting security and prosperity. The EU’s renewed engagement offers an important opportunity to turn this understanding into action,” said Minna Epps, IUCN Global Ocean Policy Director. Welcoming the commitment Published on 20 October 2026, Europe’s Northern Neighbourhood: A New Strategy for the Arctic recognises the need for closer partnerships, stronger climate research and support for the people who call the Arctic home. IUCN welcomes the Strategy’s support for multilateral cooperation, including the environmental and scientific work of the Arctic Council. Its commitments concerning marine protection, precautionary fisheries management, action on pollution, Indigenous Peoples’ participation and the renewable energy transition provide important foundations for implementation. While welcoming the continued objective of keeping Arctic fossil fuels in the ground, IUCN is concerned that the Strategy does not retain the 2021...
