It was originally aluminum, which most everyone agreed was stupid at the time but at least better than alumium, it was just pretty consistently been misspelled as aluminium until IUPAC decided that was stupid and renamed it officially.

The tendency of LLMs doing deep but brittle pattern matching has been found in dozens of domains, is most noticeable where corpus is shallow (e.g., SMILES to IUPAC conversion in chemistry). There are other examples, though, even in domains where corpus isn't thin.

You can go with no exceptions and require strict IUPAC names for all polymers. I am sure that they will like to write poly(oxy-1,4-phenyleneoxy-1,4-phenylenecarbonyl-1,4-phenylene) for PEEK and poly[oxycarbonyloxy-1,4-phenylene(1-methylethylidene)-1,4-phenylene] for PC. 😂

You can go with no exceptions and require strict IUPAC names for all polymers. I am sure that they will like to write poly(oxy-1,4-phenyleneoxy-1,4-phenylenecarbonyl-1,4-phenylene) for PEEK and poly[oxycarbonyloxy-1,4-phenylene(1-methylethylidene)-1,4-phenylene] for PC. 😂

Chemist here. A fair number of chemical compounds have multiple names associated with them; some of them describe their chemical composition in a systematic way, but then some of them don't (for a variety of reasons). IUPAC uses a combination of both with respect to "official" names.

There are 26 uppercase Latin letters but only 20 standard amino acids. Which amino acids are B, J, O, U, X and Z? Mascot treats B, X and Z as ambiguity codes per the IUPAC definition, while J, O and U are configurable.
