#iyov
There's no hapax like an Iyov hapax

Yet another of his afflictions

(The classical commentators offer two internations from 2-4 different roots, none of which is this one)
Entry:
פַּשׁ
n.[m.] Jb 35:15;—i.e. folly

Every commentator of Iyov should have been made to try to interpret a Hebrew Boggle set as a control

he was like iyov

Moshe wrote Iyov to prove how difficult his diction was without Divine puppeteering

what bugs me from evangelical Christians is how they treat Satan and demons as these literal, sometimes dualistic beings in challenge to G-d . and while sure there are cultures of say, dybbuk, or early beliefs, generally "Satan" isnt explicitly personified in Tanach aside from the book of Iyov(Job)

*someone offering me a cheeseburger*
I'm just like Iyov right now

In Iyov you can use parallelism to learn 4 synonyms for the same something no commentator can agree on

you know the old joke about how to distinguish the sifrei emet?

In Tehillim each chapter is totally unrelated to the one before.
In Mishlei each verse is totally unrelated to the one before.
In Iyov each word is totally unrelated to the one before!

I have efficiently not learned herbew enough now to be able to parse some of the words of the hebrewmaic Iyov poet.

there’s also an attested targum of iyov already at qumran which is rare for biblical texts, they didn’t have many proper targumim

(the joke here is that rn I am the world's biggest Sefer Iyov fan)

and in gemara they remark how Iyov as a person never existed, ie it has no historical-narrative-myth value and is purely allegorical

The earliest example of the name Yaḥyā currently in the database is found in an acknowledgment of a debt from 983.

while there are differing views, i would say we usually barely mention or treat it with any literal importance or reality. "Satan" commonly translates as just "adversary". as in this Talmud passage analyzing Iyov, we understand it as being the evil in mankind itself, that is "the adversary"

I once set up a learning group for Tisha b'Av for Iyov without ever having gone past the first 3 chapters

Big mistake

But the book of Iyov/Job is interesting because neither Iyov nor most of those he was addressed by appear to be Israelites/Jews, and yet the Talmud claims it was penned by Moshe as well!

once i was yonah, running away. sometimes a iyov, feeling wronged. nobody understands me, thinks avraham. i cannot speak for myself, cries moishe. take me with you, begs ruth. collapsing in the ruins i foresaw as yirmeyah. flayed alive through akiva. at my best, i hear silence with eliyahu.

note that the first two chapters and last eleven verses of iyov are in 21-book

ive seen scholarly studies that remark on a sort of "universalism" present. that is, that it wholly absent of anything that other texts try to define as the Jewish people/Bnei Yisrael. it doesnt appear Iyov or anyone else actually is

on one hand there is the sincere posting
on the other is "I am completely immersed in Iyov and man he was kind of right"
so again, עד מתי - I am gong to read M Sotah 9:15 again

the zohar comments that the core value of the torah is not anything narrative/literary but in its 'from shomayim [and thus is itself a vehicle for meditating on the divine]'-ness, and of all the books of the tanakh i think iyov is the *least* like this and the *most* like normal good literature

Applesauce subclasses —
> Cranberry sauce: You either (1) have tried to redefine Thanksgiving to not be about the genocide of Native Americans, or (2) no longer celebrate Thanksgiving, but miss the pomp of it. Your favorite book in Ketuvim is Iyov because it matches your worldview.

Bible proves "Kabir Is God"
Iyov 36:5 – Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
See, El is Kabir, and despiseth, not any; He is Kabir in ko’ach lev (strength of understanding).

(btw, as an aside, what do you think of my half-baked thought - most of Tanach seems to me as distant from Modern Hebrew as Shakespeare to the contemporary English reader, with only Iyov approaching Chaucer in opacity? [Without getting into age per se 🥫🪱])
