Euryptids, or 'giant sea scorpions', were among the largest arthropods ever to have lived.

For ~200 million years (Silurian to Late Devonian), they scuttled at the bottoms of oceans, lakes & swamps. Then they disappeared & only their cousins, the horseshoe crabs, remember their passing.

Gonna do a taxonomic revision of big eurypterids so I have an excuse to establish Jaekelopterus hydei

The largest arthropod ever was a sea scorpion. Jaekelopterus stretched about 2.5 meters, longer than a person is tall, hunting the seas 400 million years ago with claws half a meter long. Nothing with an exoskeleton has come close since. 🦂 🧪 #FossilFriday #HowToBuildAGiant Artwork by Dani Navarro

You'd have to be sooo off your rocker to not want to eat an Eurypterid steak. Look at all the meat on these guys. I bet they tasted so good

This ecosystem evolves so quickly... Next week there will be allusions to Jaekelopterus...

For #invertefest, here’s a diorama that includes Jaekelopterus rhenaniae (lower right), a giant up to 2.6 meters long aquatic arthropod that lived some 390 to 400 million years ago.

Telucaron is a giant arthropod that dwells in the murky water of the southeastern swamps. It ambushes terrestrial prey by dragging them underwater with a vice grip from its powerful chelicerae.

Ever? That would be the extinct sea scorpion, Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, which was the size of a saltwater crocodile.

In the Devonian, a sea scorpion called Jaekelopterus grew to the size of a crocodile
