Recorded this day, 1986: Miles appears at Expo '86, Vancouver, a concert that has become somewhat notorious for a 25 year old Wynton Marsalis appearing onstage uninvited during New Blues. A distant sounding audience tape captures the moment.

Thanks. I will, especially since it matches the Monk Riverside box. The Jazzdisco is horribly wrong. I wonder what their source is.

Aside: The April 12th date is from a Monk solo session that became Thelonious Himself, which has Monk's Mood on it hence the date confusion. I think.

Thanks btw for including artists & rec details, which I too do where jazzdisco, discogs etc help (see "earbirds", "afterbirds": Bsky search terms!).

Checking the estimable jazzdisco (I hope you know the site: it's very good) suggests he travelled more solo than I guessed in 1964.

A June recording in France was with NHOP, Art Taylor, Kenny Drew ....

Heh, yeah. This is one of those moments where jazzdisco is wrong. They have August 24 for "Motion." The Verve discography - the published print version, I think - has a lot of discrepancies, too, as many of the dates I have on my CDs do not always correspond w/ jazzdisco. Many do, though.

FInally - & all for now - you know discogs, but JIC you don't know jazzdisco.

Discographies are never entirely complete - new treasures (and not-so-treasures) still turn up - but jazzdisco is good at tracking main releases at least. ~Wish they stated composers!

Oh, & I said 27 years. More like 31!

which I consulted for the post (hence my mention of the 11-piece orchestra on that track) suggests the attached. (A site which does not credit composers, though.)

No discography is perfect ofc: but I try to get it right. I use artist discographies, jazzdisco, discogs, etc. AFAP.

Yes. Acc to the invaluable jazzdisco, only two (at least recorded) sessions they worked on together.

Must admit an ambivalence towards GG. Spelndid ideas, thoroughly musical, & good collaborations (e.g. with a young Don Byrd). But I always found his tone so thin, a bit colourless, even cold? ...

Just checked the estimable jazzdisco ... I hadn't realised Trane was such a regular sideman for Diz from late 1949 to early 1951. (I DID know he was on the excellent Tin Tin Deo / Birks Works Sextet + 1 date of March 1951. Presumably that or Birdland the location of that photo: TENOR!)

In other words, I wouldn't feel confused or ... guilty ( :D ) if I were you.

It's just a lighter breeze. (In some ways also makes listeners appreciate EJ more on his return!)

Actually, I hadn't realised Roy sat in quite a few times, & not only 1963, recorded or not ... as jazzdisco makes clear
John Coltrane Discography

Not sure the record label was to blame - though that was a common problem too.

How the crazy scheduling arose, I don't know.

I meant more that the NewJazz/Prestige session (Far Cry) was jammed between 2 demanding (exhausting?) Atlantic dates.

As ever, Jazzdisco is invaluable. See 20-21 Dec 1960!:

Maybe a tangent, but in case you don't know the jazzdisco site, it offers a very useful discographical check on such sessions, with lineups, dates etc.

And for its main interest, the "modern canon", listings are pretty comprehensive, incl. bootlegs etc where exist.

1957 was prolific for Mingus!

A different jazzdisco page (I got there via SEARCH of "Danny Polo" IIRC) brings up these details.

As for the music, the sessions, the lineups themselves (if that is waht you meant by "the back story", well, jazzdisco - another fine reference site - is pretty good on this.
