The funeral of legendary Montreal jazz pianist Oliver Jones took place at Union United Church in Little Burgundy, attended by family, friends, and community members. Jones, who passed away at 91, was celebrated for his decades-long contributions to jazz and gospel music. His widow, Monique Leclerc Jones, described him as an angel who had been a constant presence in her life for 25 years. The service featured speeches from family members, including his son Richard, who recalled their shared travels and golf games. Musicians like Ranee Lee and Kim Richardson performed, including the Dr. Oliver Jones Trio playing his composition 'Lights of Burgundy.' Jones, who rose to fame from the same Montreal neighborhood as Oscar Peterson, was a member of the Order of Canada and supported young musicians throughout his career. Alain Simard, founder of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, praised Jones' humility and dedication to the community. The event concluded with emotional renditions of 'Amazing Grace' and 'Hymn to Freedom,' marking a heartfelt farewell to a musical icon.
