Michael Carrick, Manchester United's interim manager, has publicly addressed the situation surrounding 15-year-old academy talent JJ Gabriel, who has reportedly requested to leave the club. The teenager, nicknamed 'Kid Messi' and widely regarded as the most promising prospect in United's youth system, had been preparing to make his senior debut in the Carabao Cup match against Brighton on Wednesday following an impressive hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League. However, Gabriel was omitted from the squad after his representatives formally requested his departure from the club. Carrick acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation, stating: 'I just think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation. He’s a young boy, he’s 15 and the biggest thing for me definitely and as a club point of view is looking after our younger players. Their welfare, their wellbeing, their exposure.' The club had been planning to include Gabriel in the squad for the Carabao Cup match, making him potentially United's youngest ever player. Gabriel, who has already been named the youngest winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season, is attempting to become a free agent by cancelling his registration with the club. Manchester United officials believe the situation is rectifiable and have not given up hope of persuading him to stay. Carrick previously described Gabriel as 'a really big talent,' while Ryan Giggs, United's record appearance maker, has called him a 'generational talent.' The club remains puzzled by Gabriel's decision to leave, as they had been actively preparing to integrate him into the senior squad. Carrick emphasized the club's commitment to prioritizing the welfare and development of young players, stating that all involved are engaged in discussions regarding Gabriel's future. The situation has drawn significant attention due to Gabriel's exceptional talent and the potential impact on United's youth development program.
