It's a gross failure of our institutions. If anyone needs a complaint template you are free to copy/paste/alter mine:

The Commission has set a dangerous precedence. Last night's scrum was an abomination. These are far-right disinfo organizations,  not legitimate news media outlets,  as ruled by the Federal Court: In Rebel News Network Ltd. v. Canada (Attn Gen), 2024 FC 1468 "The Justice held that the CRA had justified its decision denying Rebel News “qualified Canadian journalism organization” (QCJO) status through an analysis of Rebel News’s content. ...The advisory board had assessed that ...the content was largely opinion-based and focused on the promotion of one partic0ular perspective. The advisory board concluded that Rebel did not follow journalistic processes and principles [&] that the majority of Rebel News’s content is not based on facts." https://www.law360.ca/ca/articles/1881159/federal-court-upholds-cra-decision-denying-rebel-news-journalism-tax-credits-rebel-to-appeal These types of organizations, Rebel News in particular who have been compared to Breitbart, are directly responsible for the rise of extremism in the USA, as in Canada. They are not journalists: with an obvious agenda and serious ethics concerns. That the Debate Commission would give legitimacy to a propaganda organization known for spreading misinformation and giving platform to the likes of racist misogynist *terrorist organization* Proud Boys founder Gavin McGinnis is beyond reprehensible. That they have been given preference is beyond words. At who's request was this granted? It reeks of a certain political party's attempts at controlling the media and de-legitimizing reputable news organizations. We see clearly what this has led to south of the border. Does the Commission need to acquaint itself with philosopher Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance? "A tolerant society must be intolerant of intolerance to prevent the rise of oppressive ideologies. If a society allows intolerant views to flourish unchecked, it risks undermining the very principle of tolerance itself." It is not too late to reverse this and remove these outlets from tonight's scrum.  If the English Language scrum goes ahead as is, I  will be contacting my MP to call for a dissolution of the Debate Commission,  as these decisions reek of incompetence (at best), and political interference and collusion (at worst),  deligitimizing the Commission itself and calling our democracy into question. But, damage done. Shame on you all.
