Happy John Nanovic Day!

"Many pulp fans today analyze the Shadow and Doc Savage novels for psychology and what have you. All we were giving the reader then is what he wanted — action. If there were other things in them, I never knew about it.” -- John Nanovic, 1977 #docsavage #pulpmags #johnnanovic
Credited with co-creating Doc Savage, John Leonard Nanovic (October 7, 1906 – February 9, 2001) was the magazine’s first editor. When readers think of Doc Savage, they often recall the bronze-skinned hero, his high-tech gadgets, or the breakneck pulp adventures that filled the pages of Doc Savage Magazine. But behind the Man of Bronze stood a guiding editorial hand: John L. Nanovic, the original editor who helped shape the magazine’s tone, style, and lasting legacy. Nanovic was a pivotal figure in the early years of pulp publishing, most notably through his work at Street & Smith, where he also oversaw The Shadow. When Doc Savage Magazine launched in 1933, it was Nanovic who helped translate publisher Henry W. Ralston‘s vision into a compelling, high-octane reality. Nanovic and Ralston are credited with the first (unpublished at the time) novella: Doc Savage, Supreme Adventurer. Nanovic worked closely with Lester Dent, steering the magazine’s blend of science fiction, adventure, and heroism into one of the defining titles of the pulp era. Under Nanovic’s editorial eye, Doc Savage wasn’t just another pulp, but a blueprint for the modern action hero. His emphasis on pacing, fantastic yet plausible plots, and tight characterization helped turn the magazine into a staple for readers of the 1930s and beyond. Though editors often go unsung, John L. Nanovic’s fingerprints are all over the success of Doc Savage Magazine, making him a true architect of pulp fiction’s golden age.

Everyone is familiar with the Code of Doc Savage written by John Nanovic, but have you read the Code of Monk Mayfair? #docsavage #pulpmags #pulp #johnnanovic
The Code of Monk Mayfair Let me strive every moment to be of service to Doc, to the good people, and to my friends. Let me always think of ways to needle Ham, and to eliminate the bad people, with no regard for my personal safety. Let me smile when the heroine arrives, and remind her of Ham’s wife and 13 half-wit children. Let me be considerate whenever said heroine is watching. Let me do right by Habeas Corpus, and wrong Ham.

Why is Doc Savage called "The Man of Bronze?" Well, because of his skin. And why is his skin "bronze?" We need to go back to the source:

Why "Bronze?" A Flearunner recently asked "Why does Doc have bronzed skin -- canonically?" Well, in the original Doc Savage novella by John Nanovic and Henry Ralston (Doc Savage - Supreme Adventurer) we have this: "The skin was of a healthy bronze color, bespeaking of long years spent beneath tropic suns and northern skies, of an active, exhilarating life of a man of action and adventure." Lester Dent, the primary Doc Savage author, wrote in his notes: "Fine and firm and perfect as skin ever was. A skin that radiates Doc's perfect health. It, too, is bronze, made so by the elements of innumerable climes. Doc's skin has the unusual quality of not reacting to the elements---that is, it don't get red in the wind, it don't sunburn." Remind you of anyone you know?

Was The Gold Ogre (Doc Savage Magazine May 1939) intended to serve as a spin-off for a new magazine? I don't believe so and here is why...
