My holy trinity aka my junk/media/memory keeper journals.

More often than not these are society journals or journals, like the Journal of Cell Biology or the Journal of Cell Science, that are published by nonprofits operated for the benefit of science and scientists.

This brings me to another point, about journals. We generally publish in journals that have long and excellent reputations within our specific sub-fields.

I’m so tired of having to cancel subscriptions to once excellent journals because journalism is so bad now.

Yes, but in an academic journal that is, alas - like most classics journals - not open access.

It's complicated by the journals who have no incentive to remove bad reviewers from the pool.

Also I hope journals are owned by libraries, academic societies, and other better organisations, like they used to be, soon:
these pointless chatbots are what journals are literally spending our tax money on because these publishers are leeches off the public purse and then fence off academic outputs into weird systems

also Maxwell / Epstein money

“The federal government is going to try force a gambling company on Utah” is the sort of deranged conspiracy theory lunacy you read in the journals of guys defending polygamy in 1885 AND YET

Are dinosaur fossils hogging top journals? Analysis sparks debate over ‘charismatic’ finds
Fossils of dinosaurs, mammals and other glamorous species are over-represented in high-profile titles, suggests a study of thousands of palaeontology papers.

I know plenty of fossils that are over-represented in high-profile journals… (feel free to drop their names in the comments!)

A direct impact of LLMs in science. Journals are being overwhelmed by papers that use LLMs but do not really engage at all with existing literature or contextualize their results.
A new Editorial up at Research Notes from @publishing.aas.org. 🔭 Following a recent flood of AI-generated papers, we are changing our submission rules. I'm sure this will be the first of several as we try to keep RNAAS open and free, without being swamped.

"Publish or perish", but top journals now need +6 weeks for a first decision.

I would like an AI warning label. Writing code, OK, dataset churning, maybe, anything selse, red flag. I won't cite it then. And that is something journals don't want.

I do the same with predatory publishers. I just don't cite papers in their journals.
November 1, 2026 at 4:42 PM
wait wait wait - the tide is turning the other way. My journal is part of a large coalition of journals that won't accept AI papers. My @gsqjournal.bsky.social won't even accept AI-assisted papers. There could be some journals that do but they will not be prestige journals but like paper mills.
