Imho people are reacting to the inherent paradox of fanfic: GRRM being capital-G Gritty filled in most of the blank spaces with stuff that's usually gross and brutal, JRRT doing JRRT things created a timeless sturdy trellis for Horny.

Also as an ace person who's spent her whole life being a Secret Third Thing there's something cathartic to me about writing characters with ambiguous sexual orientations.
Look, my characters just aren't going to think of their identities in modern terms. And I'm not even talking about them being repressed or closeted in like a 1950s sense. I mean that they may not be aware that they're different or think it's important.
