Ian Hill, the bassist for the legendary heavy metal band Judas Priest, has announced his retirement from the group after a remarkable 56-year tenure. The announcement, made through the band's social media channels and a press release, details Hill's ongoing struggle with arthritis, which has significantly impacted his ability to perform. Hill explained that he has been battling the condition for several years, with advanced stages affecting his left shoulder, right hand, and both knees. Despite using painkillers, gels, and cortisone injections, he has found it increasingly difficult to maintain the physical demands of touring and performing. Hill revealed that he had to withdraw from a recent London show due to a tendon injury in his left shoulder, which occurred just before the encores during a Brussels performance. This incident forced the band to call upon Uriah Heep's Davey Rimmer to fill in at short notice, an arrangement that had been previously planned as a contingency for the European tour. Hill emphasized that he has neglected his family life for 57 years in pursuit of his music career, and now feels it is time to prioritize his personal life. He expressed gratitude for the 'incredible journey' he has experienced with Judas Priest, having performed on all 19 studio albums from 1970 up to 2024's 'Invincible Shield'. The band's documentary film, 'The Ballad Of Judas Priest', co-directed by Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, was released earlier this year and received critical acclaim. Hill's retirement marks the end of an era for the metal veterans, who have been a cornerstone of the heavy metal scene since the early 1970s. The band has confirmed that Rimmer will continue to fill in for Hill during the remainder of their tour dates, ensuring that fans can still enjoy the band's performances without interruption.
