A look back and farewell to the summer jungyo.

Do you remember this guy whose shikona means magnificent rising dragon?

Hoshoryu returns to the dohyo--not at start of the October jungyo (October 6 in Ibaraki), but on October 10 in Matsumoto City, Nagano.

Sitting out, too, are brothers Kotoshoho and Kotoeiho;
Takanosho, Shishi ....

Ya know?
This doesn't sound too promising--that is, that our senior yokozuna isn't in top condition and, as a consequene, has opted out of the last remaining days of the summer jungyo.

Today, Aug 28, at the Tachikawa jungyo, Hoshoryu appeared with his left shoulder bandaged and did not engage ...

The Jungyo has made its way to Hokkaido today-- and until Monday.
Posting this pic of Oho and a young Hokkaido fan--for no reason other than I think they're especially cute together.
Her mom is the proud photographer.

Abi will always be ... Abi.
From the Miyazaki Jungyo today, December 4.

There's always an argument about compelling our top rikishi to participate in the Jungyo instead of allowing them solid rest post-basho.
But, in terms of building the confidence in a young boy, nothing comes close to what Ichiyamamoto gave him--at the Jungyo.

April 12 Jungyo, Fujisawa, Kanagawa-ken.

After three weeks of resting and treatment to his chronically troubled back, Takayasu has returned to active sumo.

Appearing in Jungyo, Takayasu spoke to reporters about his unsuccessful bid for the Haru championship in which he took ...

It's Easter Sunday for many of us, but just another day on the Jungyo (today, Nagano) for our Makunouchi wrestlers.

"Accommodations for our top tier wrestlers are far from luxurious or even standard, beginning with a bus ride just to get showered after a Jungyo workout and appearance," wrote ...

Ura is The People’s Champ.

If you’re looking for someone to root for, I recommend Ura.

He’s from Kyoto. When there is a tournament in Osaka he gets more cheers than hometown boy Asakoryu.

Jungyo in London? Most cheers.

Why? When you’re the People’s Champ, every town is your hometown.
If you’re new to sumo you may not be familiar with people’s champ Ura.

A former Greco Roman wrestler turned rikishi. He wrestles with a big imagination & a ton of heart, often with hilarious results.

He’s almost like a joke character in fighting games. Be careful tho. Even Dan has an infinite.

I think the Jungyo is too long.

Last day: April 27 in Tokyo.

More from the Nanao (Ishikawa Prefecture) Jungyo tournament.
Yokozuna Hoshoryu, who withdrew from the March honbasho, is looking pretty sharp in Jungyo--defeating both Hiradoumi and Oho at 8-1, and 5-2 over Atamifuji.

Interestingly, Hoshoryu spent a great deal of time chatting and eliciting ...

Because our lovely Bluesky app is so stingy with character maximums per page, I really should list the names of the rikishi who are NOT kyujo for the upcoming Winter Jungyo that begins THIS Sunday, November 30.

A big number of TEN rikishi will sit out of the Jungyo tour due to injuries beginning...

What's really wrong with Onosato?
We know he sent word via his oyakata, the former Yokozuna Kisenosato, of withdrawing from the jungyo with a suggested return of August 16--based on, not a doctor's report, but a phone call from Kise to the jungyo director in which the stablemaster apprised ...

Notes from the Jungyo.
All Makunouchi wrestlers plus the top four Juryo-ranked rikishi are compelled to participate in the Jungyo, but if a regional tournament is scheduled in the hometown of a popular non-sekitori, he, too, is asked to take part.

To transport Ms30 Enho to his native Nanao in ...

Sekiwake Kirishima is out of the Jungyo with an injury to his wrist. He's returned to Tokyo to have it examined and treated by a hand and wrist specialist.

The Spring Jungyo will begin with a stop at the beautiful Ise Shrine, snake its way back around #Osaka, then up into Ishikawa before multiple stops in Kanto. If you're visiting the #Tokyo area, there are a host of dates that will be within reach. #sumo #jungyo

The Grand Sumo Council is chastising the Yokozunas & just in general being unsympathetic to rikishi for having injury but the council won't take responsibility for the increasingly arduous Jungyo (between basho tours).

The rikishi obviously need more recovery time but they're being exploited.

Juryo 1 Fujiseiun, on his first jungyo tour, had a banner day in Kakogawa (Hyogo) today (Dec 11)--first, by defeating former ozeki Kirishima in two consecutive bouts, and then with being selected by Yokozuna Hoshoryu for butsukari.

Especially pleased about his winning bouts versus Kirishima ...

Apirl 27. Here are a few pics of our rikishi taken during the now completed April Jungyo.
The new Banzuke will be released in a few hours!

He's back. Our senior yokozuna is on the bus to the Jungyo tour.

Suffering three losses by Day 5 of Nagoya, Hoshoryu withdrew from the tournament--unable to continue with a fractured left big toe.
Looking fresh and natty in new glasses, he told the press,
"I'll be participating starting tomorrow."

With the grueling 26-day summer tour in its final stretch, struggling ozeki Kotozakura tersely evaluates his Jungyo performance.
“I've done what was necessary. However, what I can do is limited. Within those limits, I'm doing what I can do well.”

More fulsome is 21-yr.-old Aonishiki, who ...

The following rikishi are injured and (are wisely) sitting out of the upcoming August jungyo which begins on the 2nd in Gifu City:

Yokozuna Hoshoryu
Sekiwake Wakatakakage

Makuuchi:
Oshoma
Takayasu
Tobizaru
Wakanosho
Shishi
Asakoryu

and Juryo invitee

in exercises or other forms of practice--deciding instead to rest the shoulder that he injured on the 23rd at the Niigata jungyo.
At that time, Hoshoryu described it feeling as if it was "floating."

Maybe it's a good thing, but many are skeptical about the yokozuna pulling out of the jungyo ...

The jungyo is a dumb idea since they moved to 6 bashos a year. There are only 6 weeks between meets to heal and rest and prepare. Serious injuries don't heal in 6 weeks. And moderate injuries don't heal in 6 weeks if you are also doing the jungyo. The Nihon Sumo Kyokai is an anachronism.
August 12, 2026 at 6:37 PM
The JSA has released the medical diagnoses of the nine rikishi who are kyujo for the August jungyo.

Although it's widely know that Takayasu wrestles on borrowed time with his chronic back troubles, fans in Japan were alarmed to read the severity of his condition: ...
