A remarkable moment unfolded during the opening night of Justin Hurwitz’s La La Land in Concert in Sydney when a 21-year-old audience member unexpectedly became part of the performance. During the interval, Hurwitz, the Academy Award-winning composer of La La Land, informed the audience that a musician was too unwell to continue and asked whether there was a skilled keyboard player in attendance who could sight-read music. Sterling Nasa, a university student, volunteered after encouragement from a friend. Nasa was invited onto the stage and quickly briefed by Hurwitz and the technical team. Despite never having played the celeste before, he joined the orchestra for the second half of the concert after only a short preparation period. Initially nervous, he soon settled into the role and successfully performed alongside the professional musicians. One of the biggest challenges came during the song Start a Fire, where Nasa encountered a technically demanding synthesiser solo. Rather than attempting to sight-read the difficult passage, he improvised the solo, a decision that Hurwitz later praised. The audience responded enthusiastically throughout the performance, especially when Nasa was featured. After the concert, the young musician received special recognition from both the audience and the performers. Fans requested photographs and autographs, while members of the orchestra thanked him for helping ensure the show could continue without major disruption. Nasa, who studies politics and international relations and has previous amateur performance experience, described the evening as one of the most memorable experiences of his life. He said he was pleased not only to participate in a concert for one of his favourite films but also to help deliver a successful performance for the audience.
