Social justice in the twin transition means asking: who gains, and who pays the price? #FITTEREU embeds an intersectional lens into its research looking at how gender, class, age and location interact in shaping vulnerability.

Asean risks locking in decades of coal emissions without coordinated, 'people-centred' just transition, report warns
For coastal communities around the Cirebon coal complex in Indonesia’s West Java, the removal of a proposed third plant from the country’s latest electricity plan marks a hard-won victory after years of resistance to further coal expansion. For these fishing and salt-farming families in Mundu Bay, a just transition means more than stopping new coal or shifting to another fossil fuel such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) – it means having a real say in decisions that affect their livelihoods, health and environment. “[Processes] should involve the local community from the very beginning – not only as the object of the project, but as rights holders. They have the right to say no,” Dwi Rahayu Ningrum, Head of Sustainable Development at policy advocacy institution The PRAKARSA and ResponsiBank Indonesia, told Eco-Business. Southeast Asia is running out of time to align its coal transition with global climate goals, with fragmented national policies threatening to lock the region into decades of fossil fuel dependence even as financing for new coal plants declines. While Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) governments have introduced coal moratoriums, sustainable finance taxonomies, carbon pricing schemes and transition partnerships over the past five years, few have adopted legally...

Why COP31 needs to start talking about just transition finance
Tens of billions of dollars in international climate finance have been pledged this decade for a “just energy transition” in the Global South. Most of the money, promised by wealthy governments and banks, will be funnelled into infrastructure - mainly shuttering fossil fuel power plants or installing renewables. But these investments in the shift to low-carbon economies affect workers and communities and therefore require their support. Without funding for social protection and participation, their backing is unlikely, putting the transition at risk, climate justice experts warn. Several headline-grabbing “Just Energy Transition Partnerships” (JETPs) were announced in 2021 and 2022, including for South Africa at the UN climate conference in Glasgow and Indonesia at the G20 summit. While there is a need for fair, green transitions across all economic sectors, from vehicle manufacturing to farming and health, it is energy that has attracted the most attention and money so far. The early results have been mixed, with progress on moving away from coal power in the countries with JETPs slower than hoped for. Another challenge is that the vast majority of the JETP funding on offer is in the form of loans, with the grants needed to support local communities through...
