Yoshitaka Amano is can be much more gestural with 90's enemy design than his 80's art.

I think of it as "cursive" self expressive signature sosho style compared to standard "readable" script kaisho. The main character art is more gyosho in between and distinctly Amano.
Shodo scripts. Sosho cursive, gyosho middle ground, kaisho clerical clear.

The 'hoko' (鉾) take around 3 days to complete, the smaller 'yama' (山) only 1.
Float decorations are displayed in the 'kaisho' (会所), the meeting place of each 'float neighbourhood'.
Using only rope to bind the float skeletons allows for much more flexibility during the parade.
The incredibly intricate rope binding and knots that bind the frames of the larger hoko floats. The fresh look of the Taka-yama float, the newest addition to the festival (resurrected having being lost to flames in 1864). The smaller yama floats take a single day to construct. Close up of the elaborate bindings used in the construction of the larger hoko floats. A larger hoko float newly constructed and decorated. Each float has a 'meeting place'. It is here that the float committee organises everything and where treasures are displayed before the parades. It takes about 1 day to put the smaller festival floats together.
