Welp. This made me weepy. I had a small giggle at the Greek dog names. Kanelos (cinnamon or red) and Loukanikos (sausage). All these dogs were the best dogs and they made me feel proud.

Love seeing one of the oldest and holiest Eastern Orthodox places be commodified for a new right-wing billionaire funding channel, just like the holy hesychastic elders would've intended

10/ A lot of the article focuses on Pano Kanelos, an Avishai ally who was moved from the position of UATX president to the position of UATX chancellor to make way for a new constitutional order with a “constitutional monarch” and a “prime minister.”

Gov. Abott’s administration endorses state censorship of academic freedom, political interference with public education (both K-12 and higher ed), praises the censorious Orban regime, and supports the preemptive mass arrest of college students for exercising 1A rights.

I'm sorry, but everyone in this story is unbelievably gullible, starting and ending with the author.

So here is UAustin's braintrust: Weiss, a master of the wingnut welfare gravy train like few others; Kanelos, who has great-booked his brain into epistemic closure; Lonsdale, a deeply illiberal Thiel surveillance creep, & former intellectual Ferguson, famous for attempting to dox/SWAT a student.

Pues ahora es cuando os digo que la pescadería se llama "KANELOS".

The author self-identifying as a libertarian seeds the whole piece with deeply funny dramatic irony.

“The chancellor spoke at length at RETVRN to Classical Greek ideals, huge W for academic pluralism!”

"The founders included Kanelos, who’d resigned the presidency of St. John’s College in Annapolis to run the new university, Weiss, Ferguson, Lonsdale and Heather Heying, an evolutionary biologist."

Guess who Heying is married to.

Bret Weinstein, Would-Be Galileo
Galileo has many heirs. I don’t mean biological descendants; rather, some intellectuals see Galileo’s face in the mirror staring back at them. Freed from the shackles of academia (or simply kicked out...

This is incredible. He faced *criticism* at a *free speech forum*? OH NO!

Libertarians are the biggest fucking babies known to man.

Every single time with these types it’s “I voiced my opinion, which is the epitome of free speech and healthy debate, and then someone else responded, which is tyranny and oppression.“

I think it's also a fault line between one model -- St. John's Annapolis (Kanelos) and a bunch of tiny Catholic schools, which do good education within narrow bounds but which can't turn into a modern university and are limited in their influence, and the ambitions of uatx founders.

yes, everyone identified was right-wing or IDW. but there was also larry summers

God Kanelos is such a dickweed. I still can’t believe I’ve got even tertiary University of Austin stink on me because of him.
