A Karmapa lineage master (Gyalwang Karmapa) is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school, one of the four major branches of Tibetan Buddhism. The term literally translates to "one who carries out buddha-activity". As a revered tulku (a master who consciously reincarnates to help others), the Karmapa safeguards the lineage's ancient teachings.
