#karpeles
Funny how Karpeles seems to pop up again and again in fraud cases. Probably coincidence.

Didn't know about this quirky gem in Duluth but loved it!
Karpeles Manuscript Library. Apparently this branch is closing but in the meantime if you want to see some of Albert Einstein's actual handwritten documents including some formulas (!) get up there! It's free!

🧵(5/x) Karpeles missed this one and went instead with A Tasty Treat, where we do see a little dog doing its tricks, and a prelate, though not chubby, but no scruffy, scraggy missionary. Adam Watt went with The Missionary's Adventures (The Missionary's Tale).

🧵(4/x) Ongoing: paintings not in #Karpeles mentioned in the Oxford #Proust. "…the scruffy, scraggy missionary, opposite that chubby prelate playing with his little dog as it does its tricks, is quite a little poem and shows subtlety, even depth." (The Guermantes Way, p. 436, tr. Peter Bush) ⬇️

It has been a joy rereading Karpeles alongside the Oxford Proust! And thank you!

Lovely! I love that Karpeles book, it was very helpful to me when I was translating Vol 2. I will let Brian Nelson know you're doing this!

😂 (Someone needs to publish online something like the Karpeles book but for the musical references in the Search. It probably exists, I just don't know about it.)

🧵(5/12) Page numbers for Karpeles are for the paperback. Page numbers for the hardcover are the same up to page 215, and then you need to subtract two from the paperback page number. (Karpeles added Window at the Port of Honfleur by Henri Le Sidanier on pages 216 and 217 of the paperback.) #Proust

🧵(3/12) I hope general editors Adam Watt and Brian Nelson; translators Nelson, Charlotte Mandell @avecsesdoigts.bsky.social, and Peter Bush; and, of course, Eric Karpeles will indulge my little project, even though I didn't ask permission. This is a labour of love, nothing more. #Proust

🧵(1/12) Paintings in #Proust by Eric Karpeles is a valuable resource for anyone reading the Search. Unfortunately, it is indexed only to the 1987–89 La Pléiade, the 1992 Chatto & Windus, and the 1992–93 Modern Library editions. (The latter two are the CKSM-Kilmartin-Enright translation.)

I love listening to Robert Karpeles’ takes, but him not seeing Tony Khan is deadset on doing Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay at All In because he’s too blurred by logic
