FWIW, the best way to understand elite colleges is that they’re offering two different products to two different pools of customers, and needs to maintain this in balance (while maintaining kayfabe!) for it to work.
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but fundamentally an elite school is selling two *different* products to two different kinds of applicant, and actually needs to sell both for anything to work… but can’t ADMIT it is selling both…
