A-Z of Bogs: K is for... Kettlehole mire

Hello new followers, thank you! - I am a 77-year-old Danish archaeologist specializing in the Paleolithic - especially the Late Paleolithic - who has led investigations of settlements from the Hamburgian, Federmesser, and Bromme cultures. But I am also very interested in Neanderthals ...

The significant research on climate and veg history at Kettlehole Bog needs a mention. I'll see if I can distill it into a couple of lines.

From the inland kettlehole ponds of Cape Cod this past week: eerie how differently this all hits after a decade plus among the inland kettlehole ponds of the Great Lakes

Last Fall my geologist husband took me to a kettlehole in western NY, just south of Rochester, NY. So much wonderful glacial geology in that part of the US.

I had a Fuji X-T2 body converted to full spectrum sensitivity. So far having a lot of fun experimenting with filtration and trying to decide what to use for an upcoming project- I really want to punch up the contrast between the little wetlands and the surrounding landscape

Those of you following my micro-blogging accounts for a while will have no doubt heard me talk about Sheheree bog in Co. Kerry (see below). This is an example of a kettlehole mire... I think.

You see, its status as anything really is ambiguous. See:

This was a deep kettlehole pond with years of organics in the bottom, so one dose in a shallow pond with a quick vacuum after should be OK.

Looks a bit like the end of a train of eskers coming from the NE. They disappear in the flat area and a few emerge again here and a bit to the E. Weird flat kettlehole terrain just south of it. Almost like inverted relief, or maybe it is.
