75¢ garage sale find! Rose O'Neill was the first published female cartoonist in the United States and her Kewpies made her the highest-paid female illustrator in the world at the time. The little old lady who sold it to me was excited I knew about the Kewpies stating, "They used to be everywhere!"

Cover of The Kewpies Book. White background. Kewpies written in blue. Cut out along the right side outlining the standing Kewpie who is sexlessly naked with big eyes, rosy cheeks, little blue wings, and the traditionally pointed hair. Think Cherub or cupid.

Inside page of "The Kewpies Book" with each first letter of the title in red and showing the author's name (Rose O'Neill) also in red. "verses and pictures by" in black. Under is a pile of kewpies lounging, playing, and cuddling in a flower bed. Citation information is contained in a stylized rectangle. "Our version of the antique" "© 1983 Merrimack Publishing Corporation 85 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10003 No. 11090 Printed in Hong Kong.

Last pages of The Kewpies Book. The Kewpies went out seeking a kind act and found a sad child. After they feed her some berries, make her prettier, and encourage some self-care in the form of gardening, the no longer sad child asks whose garden they are in and another little girl and her baby (?) appear "Then, oh, the fun these little girls had with Kewpish Games and whirls! The poor child laughed as merrily as any robin in a tree. And when 'twas time for her to go, Dot and the baby hugged her so. Then the Kewps took her away, dears, but brought her back another day, dears." Two kewpies are next to the verses and there are big bordered images on each page. One shows the girl whirling in a circle with the Kewpies et al and the one shows the group hug. All smiles. Lots of pink and red. Feels very warm and floral. Line work makes me think of Trung Le Nguyen.

Last page of The Kewpies Book. "Would you like to be a Kewpie or would you rather be you?" I admit this is a confusing ending... The Kewpies only real motivation seems to be kindness, so is this implying people aren't kind??

I haven’t seen this Kewpie before, they’re cute though. This line is called Kewpish, they have different heart colours with different meanings. They have a luck themed line too. #kewpie #kewpish
