It's European name comes from Greek krokos (saffron) & osme (smell). When the crushed leaves or flowers are steeped in water, they emit a strong saffron aroma
In it's native South Africa they are known as umlunge & udwendweni (isiZulu) & khalal-ea-bokone (Sesotho)

Have half a dozen limes that were looking weary in the bowl so while the sun has been shining I'm drying them so I can make khoresht khalal (served with rice with tahdig).
It's bloody gorgeous. Mind you, I now need to find some black barberries.
