Josef nodded when Khoda turned to him rather than respond to Sonja. “It’s true, Khoda, Athanasios insisted I do not bring Radomir back to the Grey lands for any kind of work.” “Then keep him from there. What are you doing here?” Sonja stepped back up. “Your favorite over there insisted on stomping in here.” Once more, Khoda turned to Josef for confirmation. “It’s true,” Josef repeated simply. “And I intend to leave him here. Frankly, Khoda, Radomir is a nuisance. He works hard, surely, but his attitude is shit.” Sonja did a double take and nearly let her laughter out once more. This was the second time in less than a couple hours that Josef was about to lose his cool.

Criseyde and Khoda walked, trying to blend in among the people moving around them. Some sat on wide stone benches, while others milled around at the windows of shops along the stone lane sending them through the bazaar. “Did we have to come inside?” “I’m sensitive to the sun. Did you forget that?” Criseyde cast a sidelong glance at him. “Why did you insist on coming to the bazaar now, then?” “Basalt is not sensitive to anything, Khoda, so we need to meet him on his plane.” Khoda shook his head as he admired antique weapons laid out at the front of an old shop. “These need cleaning,” he said, using the local dialect humming around them. Criseyde grinned as the old shop owner sent his thumb up in the air without even looking at Khoda. “Maybe keep your opinions to yourself.”

Khoda stopped in front of a rug vendor and leaned down to stop Criseyde on the spot. “You must be dreaming. If anyone cared about Faldor, besides Faldor, at the level that Faldor cares about himself, they would have appeared when he was locked up. I am telling you, again, Seyde, coming after Basalt like this is wasted effort.” Now Criseyde crossed her arms. “Then why did you come along? If you feel it’s wasted…” “Because I know how you can be, Seyde, when you get like this.” Khoda extended his hand, open palm, flat to the air, pointing all four of his fingers in her direction, and moved it up and down, as if revealing her entire form to some captive audience. “You need backup, always, and inevitably, it ends up being me.”

As a fact check here, Allah isn't the "Muslim name for God" it's the Arabic word for God, which is also used by Arab Christians, and Iranians are as I understand it just as likely to use the Farsi word Khoda (not a cognate with God, despite the superficial similarity.)

Khoda shook his head. “It is not about that. We cannot properly defend ourselves here.” Criseyde sighed and crossed her arms against her chest again. “Not every interaction is a battle, Major General.” Khoda glared at her and turned on his hip to face her directly. “Did you not notice that we are in a war back home? We are literally here for a secret weapon, Seyde, and you want to talk ēlíthios?” Criseyde glared at him. “Do not use my own language to insult me, Khoda. Have the decency to call me stupid in Farsi, like the good little Iranian soldier you are.” She stood up and shook off his hand when it landed on her forearm. “I’m not stupid. The ideas I have are valid, and even though you think you know how I am, that is not the only reason you came along to Iran with me, and you know it.” Khoda shook his head and let her stalk off toward the entrance of the bazaar, knowing she would come back to find him the second she bumped into the most minor of inconveniences. And it only took a few seconds after she left the bazaar for Khoda to be approached by the person who’d been following them. “I was wondering when you would make yourself known.”

“Such an attack on what Basalt considers his is an attack not replicated.” Khoda glared at the top of his desk, then up at his Recruit. “The king did nothing to stop them? Disparage them?” “No, sir,” Radomir shook his head adamantly, “stood in the center of their cheers. Told ’em they did right. That traitors wouldn’t be tolerated.” Khoda sighed, leaned back in his chair and focused on the plain wall beside them. Eying the lines between the stones, then the Vampire before him. “See these stones, Radomir?” He glanced at the walls with stupid wonder, confused at his Leader’s new line of questioning. “Sir, I do.” “I stacked, cemented them myself. Put up the roof…” He considered his hands, then gave a questioning look back at the wall. Pondering something Radomir could never guess at, so he fidgeted in his spot needing to know if the information he’d provided had been just good enough to redeem him in the eyes of his Patron. “Good work, Radomir. Make a stop before you go back to the castle.” “Yes, sir, anything, sir.” Radomir spoke quickly, a stupid grin pulling his features back toward his ears.

When Faldor is preparing for war.” “Oh, war is coming,” Radomir stated, “but who gains more from winning?” “Faldor, of course, he maintains his throne. Runs his father’s nation. One built for him.” Yasmeen shook her head slowly. “No, Khoda, I don’t agree.” Now he turned his ire and frustration on the strong assistant. “Why not?” “He’s old news,” Yasmeen started, taking slow steps around the edge of the circle. “Monah will have an upswing of renewed interest. The Elders’ prophecies have come true, if she is who she claims to be. Faldor, if I’m being honest, if we all are, isn’t well liked. While there is a percentage of pure bloods…” “Tread carefully, Miss Yas,” Khoda warned, tightening his arms against his body. She shook her head against his tone. “…more Thipps exist, period.” Radomir nodded slowly, making eye contact with each member of the circle. “Frankly,” Criseyde added, “Monah aims to gain more from winning. Faldor is the underdog. Odds are against him.” Khoda smiled a knowing smile now. “Which lines him right up to win.” He extended his arms out to his sides, opening up to the space between them. “He is the rightful heir.”

☝️🤓 the extremely weird etymology fact is that the English word with which "Khoda" is cognate is in fact "thumb" (ultimately both from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂-, "to swell, grow fat, to become strong")

“Of course, names are not important. Take Criseyde of the Roads and get out of our country. You have until this time tomorrow. If you fail to heed this, it will not be whispers and shadows in the Grand Bazaar that will be haunting you.” Khoda scowled and turned to face the threat. Nothing but dust mites floated in the bar of sunlight hitting the corner of the stone bench behind him. He stood up, shaking his head, and decided that he better find Criseyde. He took the few feet to the entrance of the bazaar in stiff, paranoid steps. Always looking inside shops and around corners, behind hanging tapestries, through the middle of crowds of people. Direct sunlight struck him like a shower of hot water when he crossed the threshold into the warm, desert air.
