Loved this book! Took me back to Japan and some of my favourite places. I also learned how to create a kikobun, a style of Japanese travel journal featuring poetry, prose, and pics, and I'm excited to practice it on future trips!

For today's #ManuscriptMonday, please enjoy this 1st page from a zuihitsu 随筆 by Sendai daimyō Date Shigemura (1742-1796)--evidently in his own hand. Marking it out for next time I teach zuihitsu (though this one appears more travel account, kikōbun 紀行文?)

We can never be sure if our words will be understood in the future, but I do know that Matsuo Basho's well-known literary work is a kikobun written centuries ago that still resonates with us.
