The State’s first Mangrove Conservation Centre to come up at Muzhukuthurai near Killai in Cuddalore district will serve as a hub for the conservation and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems, promoting scientific research, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, environmental education, and community participation. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Mangrove Conservation Centre was held on Wednesday by A. Periasamy, Chief Conservator of Forests, Villupuram Circle under the Tamil Nadu Shoreline Restoration Initiative (TN-SHORE). The project, with an estimated cost of ₹26.50 crore, aims to establish a dedicated centre for mangrove conservation, ecological restoration, scientific research, and public awareness while strengthening the protection and restoration of Tamil Nadu’s coastal ecosystems. According to an official, Pichavaram hosts one of the largest and most ecologically-sensitive mangrove forests in India. Despite this, there is a lack of dedicated infrastructure for conservation education and sustainable eco-tourism. The project aims to bridge this gap through an iconic, eco-sensitive development. Killai becomes Tamil Nadu’s first climate-resilient village, showcasing successful ecosystem restoration and renewable energy for coastal community adaptation.

From a solar-powered e-boat cruising through the maze of mangrove creeks in Pichavaram and honey produced through scientific beekeeping in the same ecosystem, to hybrid solar power systems installed at government buildings that reduce electricity consumption and the desilted waters of the Buckingham Canal that strengthen the health of the local ecosystem, these interventions now define daily life in Killai, Tamil Nadu’s first fully operational Climate Resilient Village (CRV). Implemented under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission (TNCCM) of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Killai has transformed a climate-vulnerable coastal settlement into a working model of how ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, and community-led action can jointly address cyclones, sea-level rise, saline intrusion, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss. Among 11 Climate Resilient Villages identified by WRI India in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Killai is the first where the CRV framework has been implemented.
