🧪⚒️ Last year an interesting paper linked kimberlite eruptions (weird, often diamond-bearing magmas formed by deep melting of continental lithosphere) to thermal instabilities triggered by rifting moving along the base of the plate to the continental interiors, triggering melting as it goes. Now… 🧵
Proposed mechanism is pretty cool! Steeping of base of lithosphere during rifting creates a convective instability that propagates beneath the older cratonic keels and disrupts them, triggering melting.
