Dan Gleeson, his 14-year-old son Jarvis, and family friend John Griffiths have created a kinetic sculpture of the iconic owl, which they've mounted on wheels and will enter into the race. The sculpture, crafted from papier mache and supported by two half-bicycles welded together with a steering mechanism, pays homage to the late Bruce Armstrong's Belconnen sculpture. The race, taking place on November 7 near Lake Burley Griffin, will see human-powered, amphibious art vehicles compete across land, water, and sand. ArtsACT has provided $46,000 in funding, including $1,000 micro-grants for builders, with Gleeson's team securing one of these grants. The team's entry, "Owl on Wheels," aims to capture the essence of Canberra while competing in categories including art, engineering, speed, and pageantry. The event, which last took place in 2022, has become a beloved community tradition, with previous winners including a dragon-themed bike called "Ronin." Organizers and participants like Travis Bullock and Constance Titterton, who have brought whimsical sculptures like Shelly the Snail and Cosmo the cockatoo to Canberra, are excited for the race's return. The event promises to be a "glorious spectacle" with opportunities for spectators to participate through awards for Best Spectator.
