This Kingtober I am watching one spooky movie a day but wearing a tinfoil crown and hoisting a giant turkey leg and yelling "well met" whenever a new spooky character comes on screen

We do a different themed list each year!
2021: Undead October (vampires/ghosts/zombies)
2022: Unearthly October (aliens/cosmic horror)
2023: Kingtober (all Stephen King adaptations)
2024: Horror Alphabet (one film for each letter in order, only from our local library)
2025: Undead October 2
September 3, 2026 at 2:54 PM
This year’s watchlist can be found under #UndeadOctober.

2024 is tagged with #HorrorAlphabet

And if you search for “Kingtober”, you’ll find 2023’s films.
I’m one of those “not a horror movie person” that goes in not with the mindset to be spooked and scintillated, but to critique an art piece.

I’m not scared because I was the monster all along. 🤓

See @nockergeek.bsky.social for the movies we’ve watched this month.

Kingtober Movie 17: The Dark Half (1993). A writer’s pseudonym refuses to be retired, and he takes it very personally. King and Romero team up again in a very well-made supernatural thriller. Only downsides are some uneven pacing and bad 90s CGI sparrows at the end. Not scary, but a good watch. A-.

Kingtober Movie 14: Needful Things (1993). The Devil comes to a small Maine town to trade artifacts for dark pranks. This movie doesn’t really have twists, but rather a spiral that goes out of control. It’s not a subtle film, but it’s fun. And yes, small towns are that nasty under the surface. B.

Kingtober Movie 4: Silver Bullet (1985). A passable popcorn werewolf movie. Good story (Cycle of the Werewolf is a good novella) marred by some rough acting, uneven pacing, and some really bad effects. I’m guessing they didn’t have Rick Baker werewolf money. A solid C+, and very watchable.

Movie 1 for Kingtober: Carrie (1976). Stephen King’s first published novel, the first film adaptation of his work, and one of the best. The direction and cinematography is fantastic, and while maybe not scary, it tells a tragic tale of a girl victimized on all sides. Highly recommended.

Kingtober Movie 7: Creepshow (1982). George Romero and Stephen King’s homage to old EC horror comics. It’s intentionally campy and wonderfully stylish, with vivid colors and dark comedy throughout. Good use of animated interludes, which really drives home the comic book feel. A fun B+.

Kingtober Movie 19: Dreamcatcher (2003). Psychic friends, alien invasions, and ass weasels. The plot threads seem poorly matched and don’t gel, a couple of characters make very stupid decisions, and the ending just kind of happens. Decent filmmaking and acting, but the story just doesn’t work. C-.

Kingtober Movie 5: Cat’s Eye (1985). A perfectly serviceable anthology with two thrillers based on short stories, and one new kid’s fantasy/horror story. Really only marred by horrible synth music. It would get a B, but Drew Barrymore gets flipped off by a troll, so it gets an automatic A+.

Kingtober Movie 16: Thinner (1996). I don’t want to glorify this with a synopsis. Bad acting, terrible characters, worse makeup, and offensive Romani stereotypes made this a chore to watch. Everyone in this movie is utterly unlikeable, except for the teenage daughter, who is a decent person. F.

Kingtober Movie 6: The Dead Zone (1983). One of the best King adaptations so far, easily up there with Carrie. David Cronenberg is a fantastic director, and he and Christopher Walken tell Johnny Smith’s tragic story of unwanted psychic visions with craft and grace. This one gets a solid A.

Kingtober Movie 15: Cujo (1983). Bat bites dog. Dog gets sick. Dog bites lots of people and traps a woman and her child in their car. One of the scarier films because it’s not supernatural, but purely natural. Short and efficient, although some plot threads are just for set-up and go flat. B.

Kingtober Movie 18: The Mist (2007). A mysterious mist descends upon a New England town, and a monster apocalypse ensues. A fantastic movie, but damn is it bleak. It also hits very hard post-pandemic, with people acting about how you’d expect. An easy A, but I don’t think I’ll watch it again.

I never like Inktober prompts, so this year it's going to be #KingTober , with prompts from #StephenKing 's greatest hit list.
I'll be sketching on my personal sketch cards (2.5x3.5), and each will be available for $31 plus shipping. Let me know in advance if you've got your eye on a specific day!

Kingtober Movie 2: The Shining (1980). I’m a fan of the book, and… I have notes. I’m with King on this one - Kubrick did not make a good adaptation. He has a great sense of framing shots, but no sense of humanity. Jack’s slide into madness feels feels more like a facade cracking. C at best.
