In this light, it's reasonable to ask why Iraqis worked on foreign-led archaeological projects in that era. I investigate the local economic & political conditions that drove them, and show how Iraqi archaeological workers asserted their needs and rights to the Directorate of Antiquities in Baghdad
Sheikh Attiyah al-Bahath and his family were loyal site-guards at Kish for many years in the 1920s-30s. Yet the archives show that almost every year he needed to ask the Directorate of Antiquities in Baghdad for their support in making sure he was adequately paid and equipped. The archives in Chicago show how little the expedition leaders cared — ironically, given how concerned they were about the looting of the site. In the early 20th century foreign archaeologists regularly bought and smuggled antiquities out of Iraq, for their own personal use and for sale and donation to museums. Yet at Kish, they sacked Iraqi staff members even suspected of the same activities, ignoring their pleas of innocence.
Khalef al-Jebbar, shown here in a 1927 photograph melting wax in order to consolidate excavated human remains, was a highly regarded expert member of the Oxford-Field Museum Expedition to Kish for many years. In 1931 he was summarily sacked for his suspected involvement in stealing from the site, though I could find no evidence to prove this was the case. But I also focus on the structural violence inherent in foreign-led archaeological projects in Ottoman and Mandate Iraq, including exploitation of child labour; non-consensual anthropometric study of adults; and expedition leaders' consistent refusal to treat Iraqi team members with full humanity.
Over the course of the 1920s, the RAF produced three different aerial maps of Kish, using the same planes and cameras they used to surveil the Iraqi population — and to bomb them into submission. One aim is simply to draw attention to Iraqi contributions to early 20th century archaeology in the country, by site guards, excavators, and administrators, and to identify as many of these people as possible.
Photograph of Sheikh Mugheir el-Salman, the only Iraqi whom OFME Director Stephen Langdon chose to name and represent in the project’s first excavation report (Langdon, Excavations at Kish, 1924: pl. I fig. 3). He is shown seated on a traditional cane chair, in the robes and headdress of an early 20th-century Iraqi tribal leader. Table summarising the names and activities of the only eight Iraqi men of several hundred employed by the French excavator Henri de Genouillac at Kish in 1911, in his Premières recherches archéologiques à Kich (1924-25). I was not able to link these names with any surviving photographs.

I miss my steel job.

I miss the way that kish condensed into shiny reflective rain in the blast furnace pouring room. (We had to wear so much protective gear and your clothes couldn't go through a metal detector ever again.)

I've never witnessed another artificial phenomenon to rival it.

Also making an apperance in the brochure was the odd-looking Tiz 2 convertible, said to be due for introduction in the coming year. Set up with the help of British investment, Kish Khodro hoped to produce 10,000 vehicles a year, 40% for export, but such projections unsurprisingly proved optimistic.
