And, although the chances are very small, it's the only place on the island it's even POSSIBLE that I might see two native species I've never seen before: ʻAkohekohe and Kiwikiu. There's a reasonable possibility for the first (tho not high), but there are only about 100 Kiwikiu left so...

'Akikiki is definitely gone. Efforts to reestablish 'Alala (Hawaiian Crow) are probably over. Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill) and Puaiohi (Small Kuaui Thrush) are on the brink.

NPS is the *main* driver of bird conservation on the islands.
