More good news for the #KlamathBasin! A couple of days ago I got to witness the breaching of the levee at the Agency Barnes--a 14,000-acre wetlands restoration project. I'm working on a feature and will publish the link once it's available.

This black and white photograph captures an older man seated on a curb, with his legs crossed at the ankles. He is wearing overalls, suspenders, work boots, and a cap commonly associated with labor-intensive professions like logging or farming. His expression appears contemplative or weary as he gazes off to the side. The background shows a plain wall of wooden planks which provides no distinctive features that would suggest an exact location but seems consistent with rural settings where such construction is common in agricultural areas. The man's attire, particularly his overalls and worn shoes, along with his posture—leaning on one knee as if waiting or resting for some time—suggests he may be a laborer who has taken a break from work. The overall mood of the photograph feels somber yet reflective, potentially hinting at themes such as hardship, resilience in rural life, or economic struggle. The text "Dorothea Lange" suggests that this image is part of her extensive body of work documenting various aspects of American life during the Great Depression and beyond.

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an expansive outdoor setting with multiple structures that appear to be military or temporary camp sites. The foreground features what seems like dry grassland, leading the eye towards several rows of tents arranged in neat lines across the middle ground. These are likely constructed from canvas material supported by frames, suggesting they might serve as makeshift housing for a transient population. In between these tent clusters, there are sporadic utility or storage units and equipment such as trailers and possibly sanitation facilities like outhouses. The background is dominated by an expansive landscape of rolling hills under a wide expanse of cloudy skies, implying the site may be located in a rural area with open plains typical for military exercises or temporary settlements. The photograph itself has several visual clues that suggest its historical context: it appears to have been taken from above and slightly elevated onlooker's perspective. The edges also show signs of wear—a dark border around the photo, likely from an old picture frame—and there is a visible number "89215" near the top right corner which could indicate either part of a cataloging system or possibly a reference for archival purposes. Overall, this image conveys a sense of organized transient habitation amidst a remote landscape and might ha [...]

This black and white photograph depicts a collection of small, temporary wooden structures set up in an open field. These units appear to be part of a mobile camp unit established by the Farm Security Administration (FSA), as indicated by the caption reference. The FSA was known for its efforts during the Great Depression to document rural poverty and advocate on behalf of those affected. The photograph shows several identical structures, each with sloping roofs, arranged in rows across an expanse of dry grassland or farmland. In the background, rolling hills stretch out under a cloudy sky. The overall scene suggests a temporary settlement for people displaced by economic hardship during that era. There are no visible signs of life, such as furniture or personal items within these units. The photograph captures a moment in history where rural America faced significant challenges due to agricultural fluctuations and the broader impact of the Great Depression on American society. This image serves as an important historical record from Dorothea Lange's work with the FSA during that time period.

This black and white photograph depicts four individuals seated against a wooden wall. They are dressed in casual, work-appropriate attire such as hats, boots, overalls, and shirts that suggest rural or agricultural laborers. The expressions on their faces range from contemplative to weary, with one person holding his face as if deep in thought. All of them appear to be taking a break during what might have been long hours of manual work. In the background is an open field with scattered debris like bottles and papers, indicating that they are outside near a working area or farmstead. The setting appears humble, possibly a temporary resting spot for laborers waiting for transportation back home after completing their tasks in town. This photograph captures the essence of rural life during agricultural seasons when individuals traveled to various locations seeking work. This image is part of Dorothea Lange's extensive documentation on American society and its social issues during the Great Depression, which included working conditions, migration patterns, and daily lives of common people across America.

The image is a black and white photograph depicting five men seated against the exterior wall of what appears to be a building with horizontal siding. They are dressed in work attire typical of agricultural laborers, including overalls, hats, boots, and sturdy shoes suitable for manual outdoor tasks. From left to right: The first man wears a dark cap, denim overalls secured by suspenders, and has one hand resting on his knee while holding what seems like a cigarette between the fingers of his other hand. Next is another in similar attire with no distinct accessories or props; he sits casually with legs crossed at the ankles. The third man sports a light-colored hat resembling a straw boater style, dark overalls, and boots. He has one leg extended forward while resting on what looks like a sack filled with hay or some other agricultural product. His right hand is raised to his chin in a pose suggestive of deep thought or contemplation. The fourth figure wears a white cap that's been pushed back behind the ears, revealing short hair. The man dons dark overalls and boots; he has both feet on what seems like a burlap sack with hands resting by his sides and an attentive expression as if listening intently to someone speaking off-camera or absorbed in thought. The last individual is seen wearing a wide-brimmed hat, suggesting protection from the sun, possibly indicating ho [...]

The image depicts an elderly man sitting against a wooden building with his belongings beside him. He is wearing worn-out boots and appears to be in a state of poverty or homelessness, as suggested by the tattered clothing and makeshift bedding materials around him. He has unkempt hair and holds a newspaper titled "ELKO DAILY," indicating that he may have some awareness of current events despite his circumstances. His expression seems contemplative or weary, with visible signs of aging such as wrinkles on his face. The photograph is in black and white, which gives it an aged appearance, hinting at the possibility that this image was taken during a historical period when poverty among rural laborers was prevalent. Additional context provided by "Single man" suggests he might be one of many individuals affected by economic hardship or displacement. The mention of California's Siskiyou County and Tulelake indicates a specific geographical location, which could help identify the time frame and conditions during which this photo may have been taken.

The image is a black and white photograph depicting nine individuals, presumably men, in various states of rest or contemplation. They are seated on the ground against the wall of what appears to be an industrial building with large windows and metal siding. The setting suggests a break during work hours. Starting from left to right: 1. A young child is sitting upright on the grass next to adults. 2. Seven men sit in a row, all wearing hats that appear practical for outdoor labor; three are resting their heads on knees or hands, while four look towards different directions with expressions of fatigue and contemplation. 3. Two more men lie down: one reclines fully across two others' legs as they stretch out beside them, the other is seated upright but appears disheveled. The overall mood conveyed by this photograph seems to be one of weariness or anticipation for work ahead, possibly linked to agricultural labor given the context provided in the caption. The image captures a candid moment without any apparent staging or posed elements.

The image depicts a rural scene with several agricultural buildings and features. In the foreground, there is an open gate leading to what appears to be fields of tall grass or crops. A wooden fence runs parallel to this field, extending into the background where it intersects another structure. In the middle ground stands a prominent barn-like building with large doors that are partially open, revealing dark interior space possibly used for storage or housing farm animals. The roof is steep and appears to be made of corrugated metal sheeting. Attached to the side of this main building are several smaller structures resembling silos or storage units. Behind these buildings on a hillside, there's an arrangement of numerous tall chimneys or vents that align in parallel rows along the slope of the land. The landscape is relatively barren with minimal vegetation apart from sparse grasses and weeds growing around the fences and pathways. The photograph is captured in black and white, giving it a timeless quality. There are no people visible in this scene; however, the setting suggests an active farm or agricultural operation.

He is wearing lighter-colored trousers and shoes with visible laces that match or complement his shirt color which seems dark, possibly brownish-red. His hat's brim angle suggests it might be positioned to the side as he looks directly ahead. [Original post on mastodon.ozioso.online]
The image captures a moment from the past where individuals and families were likely engaged in agricultural work, specifically during potato harvests. A vintage car is parked on dry earth with its roof racks loaded with supplies or equipment for their tasks. Two men are present; one appears to be working on securing items on top of the vehicle while another stands beside it, possibly taking a break or overseeing operations. In the background, there's a row of military-style tents indicating temporary living quarters during this seasonal work period. These families were part of migratory workers who traveled from region to region following harvest seasons in search of employment opportunities within rural communities like Klamath County, Oregon as documented by Dorothea Lange for Farm Security Administration (FSA).

The image is a black and white photograph showing five men sitting on the ground against a wooden wall. They appear to be resting or taking a break from work, as suggested by their casual stances and some holding what seem like bottles of water. Each man is dressed in rugged attire suitable for outdoor labor: overalls with suspenders, hats (some wide-brimmed), boots, and one pair has gloves on his hands. The men are facing away from the camera or have turned to look at something off-camera, indicating a moment of rest rather than posing for the photo. The setting suggests an agricultural context, possibly after working in potato fields as indicated by the caption "Bindle stiffs in town three weeks befor opening on Klamath Basin potato harvest. Tulelake, California." This refers to Bindle stiffs being a type of farm tool used during harvesting and implies that these men might have been part of a larger group involved in farming activities. The image carries the general caption number 43 which could refer to its identification within a collection or series by Dorothea Lange. The context provided suggests this photograph is from historical documentation related to agricultural labor, specifically potato harvests on farms like those around Tulelake, California during that period.

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an older man wearing a fur hat. The individual appears to be outside, with his head turned slightly away from the camera as if looking into the distance or at something not within view of the photo's perspective. He has visible lines on his face which suggest age, particularly around his eyes and mouth area. The subject is dressed in dark clothing; a coat or jacket that features a prominent zipper detail, indicating it may be cold outside given how he’s bundled up for warmth with such heavy outerwear. The background consists of brick walls stacked vertically creating a textured backdrop against the man's figure. Additional information about this image comes from an external source suggesting the person is associated with Klamath Basin ranching and hails originally from Benton County, Arkansas before relocating to Oregon sixty-four years ago. He has expressed views on rural degradation due to potato farming and poolrooms which could reflect a socio-economic commentary or personal opinion. Technical details of this image such as its resolution (6495x3120), size in bits per pixel ('bpp'), date, timestamp, exposure settings are also noted but not fully detailed here.
