A record sea campaign at the KM3NeT ARCA site brought a dozen new detection units online, together with two new submarine junction boxes and an upgraded acoustic positioning system. Despite challenging weather, the operation set a new efficiency record for KM3NeT. ARCA now counts 62 detection units.

One module of KM3NeT with 31 light sensitive ‘eyes’ (called photomultiplier tubes) in the deep sea. The observatory which detected the ultra-high energy event (called KM3NeT/ARCA) had 378 of such modules installed at the time of the detection, on a total of 21 vertical detection lines attached to the sea bottom. The lines are at almost 100 meters distance from one another, and are almost 700 meters long. Altogether being a huge network of light sensitive ‘eyes’. Courtesy KM3NeT.

There’s a telescope 3.5km down at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s called KM3NeT because it’s spread over a cubic kilometre of seawater.

It isn’t looking for starlight, but faint blue flashes caused by passing neutrinos.

The #EU funded #KM3NeT INFRADEV2 project came to an end on 31 December 2025.
During three years it provided strong support towards the full implementation of the KM3NeT Research Infrastructure.
