Jed pulls out of Devere's grasp and reaches for the spot he spit on his face. Jed: Ack! What the hell're you-- Jed rubs his fingers over the spot on his face and notices an unpleasant sensation as well as a subtle, sizzling-esque noise. Jed: ...Ow... Jed steps away and swings forward his upper body in pain, still holding onto his face, now with both hands. Jed: Oww! Why's it burnin'?! Devere observes in silence. Jed straightens up and pulls his hands back revealing something like a red rash and large, oozing blisters on the spot where Devere had spit on him. He can't quite see what's happening but is horrified nonetheless. His hands also have some light rashes on them from touching the nocuous saliva. Jed: M... My face! Oh god, what did you do?! Jed turns back towards Sissy who has a hand over her mouth in mild concern at his predicament. The canary on her shoulder flies away. Jed: H-Help! My skin's been befouled! I need healin'! Devere shoves his hand into Jed's back with the intent to push him away from the area. Devere: NO. You can find another healer, like you said.

Jed (off screen): So how about we get together at Riggs' bar tonight? My treat. Sissy, though still smiling slightly, remains uncomfortable and drops eye contact with Jed. Sissy: I-I'm sorry, you're very kind, but I don't really drink. Suddenly Jed loses his patience and gets right in Sissy's face. Jed: Ugh, always an excuse! What, one of the lowly everyfolk ain't good enough for ya? Sissy: I didn't say that, Jed! The canary on Sissy's shoulder is startled by Jed and flutters, almost flying away. Jed backs off slightly but continues to give Sissy a hard time. Sissy herself is looking upset. Jed: Maybe I'll just stop comin' here all together! As Jed continues to go off, Sissy notices something coming up behind him (and so does her canary) and looks surprised. Jed: You ain't the only healer, and ya definitely ain't the prettiest girl. Suddenly we see Devere's arm yanking Jed backwards by his shoulder. Jed looks caught off guard. Sissy: Ah Devere don't- With a "pttoo" sound, Devere spits right on Jed's cheek.

A shot of a nice piece of land with a large, light brown home, a small barn and cabin, a garden (with a white rabbit nearby, peaking at it), fencing, and trees. Someone is sitting on a bench while another is standing near them with their hand held out, allowing it to be held by the other person. A faint, magenta glow can be seen where the hand is being held. There is a stone path around the properly leading to a nearby road. At the entrance is a signpost. A closeup of the sign that reads "Toad Lilies" in a cursive font. Another sign is attached below it that lists some of their available services like "Healing" and "Potions", though we can't see all the words. A man named Jed pulls his hand back to himself and smiles at the other person. Jed: How about that. It's completely gone! Thanks, Sissy. We see Cerise Meadows (AKA Sissy) is the one sitting on the bench, having just healed the man's hand with magic. It's the same woman who helped cure Knell's illness, but now we can clearly see her. She has hair that's dyed light, peachy pink, eyes with a magenta hue, and a dress that has light beige and peach colors. She's petting a small yellow canary that's sitting on her shoulder and smiles uncomfortably at the man. Sissy: It's fine, but... a little of our salve would've been enough for that cut, I think. She does not appear to have a Viridian accent like the others. Jed: And pass up the chance to have you heal me by touch? Sissy: Uh... heheh...

Devere continues to go through the town on unicornback and happens to come near a large pool of water where a group of people clad in white garb are gathered at. Nearby is a white church building with stained glass windows and a tree with various ribbons tied to it. A keeper (who is like a priest) wearing green robes is in the water and speaking to the crowd. Keeper: We are those exiled from Eden and denied blessed conjuration. He continues as Devere and his unicorn slowly passes by on the nearby road. Only one man looks back at him, the rest of the crowd seem mostly focused on the keeper's words, save for one little girl who looks like she's freezing in the water. We see the keeper's back. Keeper: Our misuse of his gifts tainted the essences, forcing his hand. But God forgives and awaits our purified spirits. We finally see the keeper from the front. He's a stocky man with neck-length, dark blonde hair and some stubble on his face. He holds up a vial with a lid shaped somewhere between a star and a cross and has a circle at the center of it. A similar symbol can be seen on the church behind him. Keeper: Today, I've an elixir from the Fold itself! One with these waters, our very souls will be cleansed of sin. We see Devere is looking on at the scene. His eyebrow is raised and he looks less than impressed. Keeper (off screen): Praise the All God, and amen! The crowd: Amen! Devere turns his head away. His face is now mostly hidden by his cloak. Devere whispering: Fuck the Fold and their snake oil.

A little while later, we see Devere riding Bill the unicorn through a part of the town of Far Water. Many brown cabins surround the still-wet path he's on, and there's also long moss-filled trees, large jars for collecting water, and a few people going about their everyday business. We see a woman doing laundry by hand with a washboard (and clearly frustrated with the task) while her baby lays in a wooden cradle that's hanging by ropes from her cabin's porch ceiling. Baby: Gooo~ We see a father, his daughter, and her grandfather playing a game of horseshoes while talking and enjoying each other's company. And we once again cut back to Devere who's still riding the unicorn on the path. He lets out a big yawn as he's still tired and this trip is pretty routine. A man in a decorative, feathered hat riding a large, red bird creature called a magnales (which is walking, not flying) has already passed Devere and looks back in awe at the necromancer and his steed. Man: Whoa...

Devere looks surprised and confused. Devere: A... A seizure? Devere pinches his nose and shuts his eyes, exasperated. Gates removes his hand from his shoulder. Devere: Mmf, lose just one night of sleep and I get old fits... ridiculous. Gates: Listen, since ya probably made it so that we're not buryin' two this week, you can head on home and have a rest. Devere gives Gates an irked expression and finally taps some of the ash off of his cigarette. Devere: No, I'm fine. Those stupors don't usually come in sets. Gates: I know that, son... ...but I'll likely need ya fresh for diggin' a grave tomorrow! Gates grins mischievously, pointing a finger up in the air. He makes it clear that he's not planning to go easy on him the following day, which in this case, forces Devere's fatigue to win. Devere: Ugh. Well... you sure? Gates holds up his hands dismissively. Gates: Yeah, get goin'! I was embalmin' without your magic for years, y'know. Devere looks away, the tension leaving his face a little. Devere: Alright... thanks. But I still need to go into town. Gates gives Devere a big smile. Gates: Oh! Ya gonna repay Sissy with a date? Devere looks very annoyed by this question as he begins to walk away. Devere: Bye, Gates.

Devere rigidly convulses on the ground, his eyes rolling into the back of his head and foam forming at his mouth. In spite of his predicament, the boys begin to run away. Child1: He's a death mage! A shambler! He'll put the rot on us! Child2: He's gone all stiff...! Child1: Just leave 'im and let's get outta here! A closeup of young Devere still having the seizure, now helplessly alone, but suddenly things shift back into present time as adult Devere hears his name said and blinks, returning to full consciousness. Gates: Devere. Devere, still holding his cigarette, looks at Gates, who has his hand on his shoulder and is staring at him with a concerned expression. Devere: Yeah? Devere doesn't appear to know that he's gone a minute or two without responding to him. Devere eyes the hand on his shoulder and sneers, not approving of the touch and wondering when his hand got there in the first place. Devere: ...What're you doin'? Gates: Ya did the thing where you don't respond for a minute.

Young Devere looks confused and annoyed. Devere: What are you guys on abou-?! Suddenly Devere's eyes flash chartreuse green, the same color that stains his eyes in adulthood, and his expression changes to one of surprise. The green color fades and Devere's pupils dilate. He mumbles something mostly unintelligible as his consciousness seems to become impaired. Devere: Hgkk~ The other two boys watch in horror as Devere falls backwards stiffly, losing his grip on the small vertebra. Devere lands on the ground, a completely blank expression on his face. He has lost a sandle in the process. Child1: Wah he's possessed! Child2: N-No, it's a seizure! He told me he has 'em sometimes- Child1: But his eyes were glowin'! You saw it!

We are now in the past, and the first panel shows a shot of the sky in between some trees. Child1 (off screen): That's crazy, Devere! It ain't possible to just know where bones are at! We see three children from above. A red-headed boy (Child1) with light skin, probably around the age of 12 or 13, and a younger boy (Child2) with southeast Asian traits. The third child is none other than a young Devere at the age of 7. They are in a wooded area, with many batches of white mushrooms on the ground. Devere is digging in the dirt near a said batch of mushrooms. Child1: It'd take a long time of searchin'! You probably just got lucky once. Child2: He's so weird. Devere: I'm tellin' ya, I do! I just feel it, a coldness, an' there it is! We see Devere's filthy hand holding a piece of bone up in the air, showing the other children. Child1 looks baffled, while Child2 seems curious. Devere: Look! See? Child2: Wha... that' a bone? We see young Devere up close, who's looking happily at his find. He has short brown hair that's currently, of course, without any gray streak, a big open-mouthed grin with a tooth missing, and his eyes are more hazel in color, not yet stained by chartreuse green-colored magic. He proceeds to mispronounce the name of the bone in his hand. Devere: Yep, I've found this 'ere type afore! Pa says it's a vertebee. Ya know, like from a spine? Child1 (off screen): But... how could-- The realization hits Child1. He looks angry and mildly fearful, pointing accusingly at Devere. Child1: Ah! You're a necromancer! Devere looks at him, totally confused. Devere: A what? Child2 steps back with a look of disgust and holds up his hands defensively. Child2: Oh my god, git away! You'll give us gangrene!

Gates looks at Devere, who appears to be still smoking his cigarette, but hasn't taken another puff in a bit. Gates: Fetch some water for that spew when yer done with that. You got the better back for haulin'. There is no response. Gates, with his arms still crossed, steps toward Devere's front, raising an eyebrow in confusion. Gates: ...You hear me? Devere is staring slightly downwards, blank and unresponsive. He's still holding his cigarette but not moving an inch. Gates: Devere? Gates snaps his fingers in front of Devere's face. *Snap snap* Still nothing. Not a blink or a twitch. Gates looks mildly concerned, but seems to know what's happening. Gates: Huhh. Ain't seen ya like this in a while. A closeup of Devere's staring eye, which appears to be slightly dilated. The final, small panels are of the image blurring and darkening.

We fade into the next scene, now back outside, and see a shot of Devere's lower face taking a puff from a cigarette. It's wrapped in some sort of green leaf. Devere exhales the smoke and we now see his entire face, which holds a tired, rather disinterested expression. His hood is now lowered and the gloves from earlier have been removed. In the background someone is screaming at the top of their lungs. A woman runs out of the mortuary with wide, crying eyes, covering her mouth. She has tan white skin and medium blonde, short hair, and is wearing a light green shirt, teal green dress, a beige sash around her waist, and an olive green scarf. She has just seen her husband's body and confirmed that it was indeed him that was killed by the knucker. The cemetery's Keeper of the Dead, Jonan Cleary, follows close behind her and puts his hands on her shoulders. He has dark skin, partially tied back long, black dreadlocks with some graying streaks, a gray beard, and is wearing a black cloak and the standard gray robes of a death keeper. He also has some sort of light gray pendant on. Devere and Gates have been standing far away from the scene, near a tree, to give the two some privacy. Widow: *sob* Oh god... Cleary: I'm so sorry, child. But he is in the Heavens now. At one wi-- The woman then gags. She was immediately nauseated by the sight and smell of her husband's corpse, and the shock and stress only adds to it. Widow: Glrk A shot of Gates standing with his arms crossed. The woman vomits off-screen. Widow: Blaargh! Gates expression tells of both mild amusement at what Jonan just avoided, and sympathy for the woman. Gates: Good thing he was behind her.

We see multiple shots of the corpse's wounds being closed up by stretching out what remaining flesh there is over them, via Devere's green necromantic magic. The wounds being closed are gaping bite wounds on his side and arm, and one of his legs, which is missing the entire lower half starting above the knee, is closed into a simple stump. The end result would be presumably be imperfect. Gates answers Devere's concerns as he works. Gates: We just gotta clean 'im up as best we can. Then I'll use some powder and sprays before we cover 'im back up. Devere stares at the corpse with glowing eyes and continues to gesture with his hands to finish up his magical work. Gates simply observes. Gates: At least his head ain't too bad. Besides the rot, I mean. You can close them scratches on his face easily, right? Devere: He'll still look scarred. A closeup of the withered corpse's face, which appears to be a young man with longer brown hair. His eyes are closed but his mouth hangs open a little. There are very large cuts all the way down his face from knucker claws. Gates comments off screen. Gates: Just do what ya can. The shot of the man blurs and we fade out to the next scene.
