the kohekohe, they are still blooming (the only tree in aotearoa to exhibit cauliflory, i think)

We can't remember exactly where the first photo was taken so it's not a direct comparison but these images are indicative of the positive changes ten years after fencing with animal pest control.

Always pleasing to see kohekohe seedlings popping up in areas that still have cattle grazing.
Under a scrub mix of kānuka, tauhinau, coastal tree daisy and gorse.
Some decent sized ngaio and mahoe appearing in the background too.

Did half the Waikanae Garden Trail including this spectacular spot that someone has created. Below the house the lake was full of huge fish, above it was this gorgeous kohekohe bushwalk.

A cold, wet morning and just a small crew but we got around another 70 infill plants in the ground and released previous plantings. 🌏

Another thing with the collapse of forest ecosystems is that understorey plants like kohekohe are highly fire resistant. A disturbing array of positive feedback loops entangled here.

The hills overlooking Waikanae make up Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve. The reserve contains 330 hectares of kohekohe and rimu/broadleaf forest. Hemi Matenga died in 1912. The reserve was established in his memory by the trustees of his estate. www.kapitimuseum.org.nz/virtual_exhi...
