to me it reads like. kotoyama very obviously recognizing "i put a character in here and later realized i don't actually know what i'm going to do with her, i kinda have to write her out"-

Can I just say, this is probably one of the best uttalization of the Hellsing archetype in vampire media, like I don't know if Kotoyama was specifically pulling from Hellsing but this is kind of who he is Dracula. He's a goober, extra talented and well trained, but a goober nonetheless.

the sunday shounen editors had kotoyama strapped to a table with a big razor pendulum advancing on him demanding he turn his goofy heterosexual manga into a battle plot every month and apparently his lasting revenge was giving his 35 year old vampire a dead wife backstory

Their song "Call of the Night" is sung from the perspective of a 14 year old being lead into age inappropriate situations by an older woman, which inspired Kotoyama when coming up with the concept for the manga.

Thats so fucking unfair man, if my crush left me with a Dear John letter and asked me to raise their clone, I can't even say I wouldn't be in the same bitter spot at Kabura, this sucks I knew this about myself already but fuck you Kotoyama

kotoyama is a fascinating author to me bc half the afterwords are "yeah idk I'm writing without an outline and i don't know where the story is going" and yet the whole thing flows perfectly imo

The first page is a notable example of "space is time" and how equal time can be used to create anticipation. Kotoyama isn't an amazing action choreographer (his posing is often underwhelming) but he's undoubtedly good at dramatic panelling. You can sense that Nazuna is about to eat a good one
One of my favorite extended comedy bits in Call of the Night is when they run into a vampire who actually knows how to fight (who is just Shermie KoF) and Nazuna immediately gets comically rinsed and spin tossed over the horizon

She’s unhinged too, I liked her so much on first glance that I bought the first 4 volumes after finding out Kotoyama made her (I really liked Dagashi Kashi)

Volume 17 ends the Hokkaido arc, an arc Kotoyama readily admits has issues. On my end, I found it meandering and unfocused in its early stages with how it shoves Nazuna to the side being an early, unresolved issue. (Haven't read volume 17 yet)
