A grin spreads across Chan’s face as he catches the tail end of a shimmery outfit disappearing behind the fake locker door. He gives a brief nod to the shopkeeper as he slips through the aisles, but his focus is solely on ducking behind the locker into the narrow hallway, lifting his gaze ahead to where his quarry has slowed, walking backward as his fingertips drag against the walls. His eyes are fixed on Chan, and as always, it feels like Chan is the one being hunted, not the other way around. The smokey eyeshadow sets the man’s eyes in stark relief, pinned on him as his lips curl knowingly. Chan is about to call out, but all too soon, the hallway opens into the club beyond, laughter and chatter amongst the crowd swallowing him up. He darts forward, trying to catch a glimpse of where the man had gone, but he doesn’t try too hard—he always loses him at this point, and the man always finds him again. Deciding he might as well wait and not seem too eager, he elbows his way to the bar, sitting down and refusing the offer of a drink. The bodies out on the dance floor blur at the edges, nothing quite catching his attention in the dim lighting. All there’s left to do is wait, and he doesn’t wait long. Light fingertips at his shoulder, trailing across his back. He closes his eyes, and he can feel the soft exhale before lips brush against his ear. “Miss me?” “Someone finally told me your name,” he says, bringing his hand up to cup the man’s cheek without turning around. “You’re clearly interested, so why play hard to get? Minho.” Minho’s fingers barely pause as they smooth down his bare arm, leaving tingles in their wake. When Chan finally opens his eyes and turns his face toward him, he leans in a little closer, the smirk widening. Their breaths mingle. If Chan leaned forward any further, their lips would be pressed together. “More fun this way, don’t you think?” He pulls away yet again, infuriating and tantalizing all at once, but this time, Chan follows him and his swaying hips into the crowd, determination building. He can’t let him get away again.

The phone rings on his bedside table, and Jeongin fumbles for it, blinking blearily at the caller ID. Bang Chan. His heart is hammering, clawing its sickeningly hopeful way up his throat, and this is probably a bad idea but that feeling itself is enough for him to pick up. “So are you finally talking to me?” He can just about picture Chan’s wince on the other end, even months apart. “Yeah,” he says, soft and guarded. “I guess the first thing to say is that I’m sorry.” Jeongin had been preparing himself to yell and scream, but the hollow, empty sadness and guilt in Chan’s voice is enough to mollify him, at least a bit. “I just wanted you to be honest,” he settles on, unsure how to accept the apology for now. “You never shared the hard things or the most crucial things, and look where it got us.” “I know,” Chan says, voice brittle even through the fuzzy speaker. What hurts the most is that Jeongin knows Chan would have beaten himself up a thousand times more than Jeongin ever could, that he’s probably rehearsed this conversation a thousand times in the mirror in their long stretch of radio silence. “I wanted to be perfect for you.” “Well, I don’t want that,” Jeongin grits out. “If—and this is a big if—I let you back in around me, you’re going to have to get used to showing all the ugly bits. Honesty is the best policy and all that. I’d rather have an ugly truth than a pretty lie and you of all people should know this.” There’s quiet for a moment on the other end of the line. Jeongin waits, because if nothing else, he can always count on Chan to process something fully, understand even the bits he hasn’t said. “I… I might not deserve it, but I want to try,” he says eventually. “Please, I don’t expect anything but a chance.” The last bits of ice around Jeongin’s heart are cracking, despite wanting to hold strong. He breathes out slowly staring at the dark ceiling, reminding himself of the good things, reminding himself that he has the leverage here. His free hand fists in the bedsheets, gathering courage. “I never blocked you,” he starts. “But that’s not an invitation for now. I’m going to take my time, and I expect you to do the same. If I don’t see any changes even as friends, then…” He lets it hang in the air, but he knows Chan understands by the sharp intake of breath on the other end. “Thank you.” Chan’s voice catches, breaks at the end. Something watery creeps into his words. “Really, that’s… That’s all I can ask for.” Jeongin closes his eyes, trying not to feel. “Goodnight, Chan.” “Goodnight.” Jeongin’s not entirely sure what he’s feeling as he hangs up. The clawing of his heart in his throat is gone, somewhat. There’s a lingering heavy feeling that sits in the pits of his lungs, but there’s also something lighter in there. For the first time in months, he feels like he can breathe without fighting past something lodged in his chest. He hopes that’s a good sign.

Seokmin finds Chan on the roof again, as predicted. The night isn’t too cold, but he’s brought a blanket anyway to dramatically shake out over Chan’s body and climb under as Chan laughs and protests halfheartedly. “Can’t sleep?” he asks, smiling in satisfaction and snuggling into Chan’s side. Like all the other times this month that he’s found Chan up here, Chan shakes his head, his smile fading. He drapes his arm loosely over Seokmin’s stomach and tilts his head toward him, letting out a soft sigh. “Thinking too much again.” “You’re always overthinking,” Seokmin says, not unkindly. “But hey, remember? Things we can control.” Chan sighs again, nods. “It just feels so aimless. I feel lost. Sometimes I wish I could just figure all this shit out just by talking about it out loud.” “That part helps too,” Seokmin reminds him. He leans in to kiss Chan’s cheek softly. “And in the meantime, I’m still here. Keep talking to me, yeah?” “Yeah.” They’re quiet for a few moments, just looking up at the sky together. Chan’s fingers card softly through Seokmin’s hair, and Seokmin can only hope that he’s focusing on these little moments in the present: the lights of the city distant around them, the stars above, the heat of their bodies between them, the slow, steady rhythm of their hearts. “That one’s the Big Dipper, right?” he asks eventually, pointing up toward the cluster of stars. “That’s the only one I remember.” “I’ve told you so many,” Chan scoffs, but he does guide Seokmin’s hand to an adjacent section of sky. “There’s more to it that makes up Ursa Major.” “The bear one?” Seokmin squints. “It looks more like a rat to me.” Chan pauses, then drops his hand, laughing. “You’re full of shit,” he says, gently clocking Seokmin’s shoulder. He must have realized Seokmin is trying to gently distract him. “But you think I’m funny!” Something in Chan’s voice has eased, at least. “Yeah, well, I’m biased because I love you.”

Donghyuck is just having fun now, dancing around the infrared beams without a care in the world, teleporting and weaving through them in an intricate dance. The only things that Jeno can catch from the platform above are the bright pink highlights of his hair and the yellow cargo pants as they catch the tiny bits of light reflecting off of him. Bold of him to wear such bright colors to such illegal activities, but Jeno’s not much better. “Quit showing off,” Jeno hisses down at the warehouse floor. He isn’t quite able to hide his smile, however, and Donghyuck knows this too, even from that far down. The demon form jumps out of him, swooshing the entire thirty feet in a perfect arc to hover centimeters from Jeno’s face before it disappears back down, and he can hear faint cackling laughter as Donghyuck disappears into the entrance to one of the loading bays. “He’s being a dick again, isn’t he?” Jaemin gripes fondly through his earpiece. “Hey, tell him if he doesn’t hurry the fuck up and botches this heist, he’s getting blue-balled for a month.” There’s an audible and overdramatic gasp from Donghyuck, who Jeno can no longer see below him. “I can hear you just fine, you know! And please, like you could keep your hands off of me.” “If you challenge him he might just do it out of spite,” Jeno points out. “At least you’ll have me, I guess.” “I know you three are disgustingly in love and all that, but can you please not flirt over comms in the middle of a job where everyone can hear you?” Renjun sounds exasperated, and Jeno can faintly hear the murmured agreement of Chenle from somewhere in his vicinity and does feel a tiny bit bad, until Jaemin chuckles, way too amused. “Are you feeling left out, Renjunnie?” “What? No, what the hell.” “We should give him a kiss when we get to the jeep,” Donghyuck agrees immediately, and Jeno can’t help the laugh that escapes him. Trust Jaemin and Donghyuck to snipe at each other and team up against everyone else. Thankfully, Mark comes to Renjun’s rescue. “Hate to break this up, but there’s a watchdog and other guards down the hall from Donghyuck and Jeno. You should move out the bay to your right, then circle around the outside until you see us with the jeep. Jisung already got the other cargo.” “Jeno, puppy, will you pick me up pretty please?” Jeno ducks away from the edge of the platform and a sweeping searchlight, starting down the ladder on the other side to hurry toward their exit point. “On my way.”
